Built in 1924 and originally named the Pippin, the Thunderbolt was rated the #1 roller coaster by the New York Times in 1974.
Photo taken at Kennywood Park, Pittsburgh, PA.
Great use of mono. works perfectly to age the coaster. lovely dynamic shot
I'm glad they renamed it. 'Pippin' is a name for a hobbit or an apple, not a rollercoaster.
It wasn't actually renamed the Pippin. The Pippin was the first wooden roller coaster built in that specific location, and also the most popular ride. Kennywood owners built the new coaster, The Thunderbolt in the same place *after* they dismantled the Pippin. Pieces of the Pippin were used in the construction of the Thunderbolt, mostly for cost but some nostalgia as well. But they were always two different coasters. Great shot, how did you get so close? I'm from da'burgh so I have a pretty good idea of what you went through to get this shot. Would love to see the color version if there is one..
Thanks! I stood just near the fence, to the right of the "Potato Patch", to get the shot. I uploaded the original to compare.
