I think tonemapping fails when the image looks false, and the balance of this image looks wrong. The whole feel of the background is low contrast, dark and brooding, but the foregound is light and the water has areas of blown highlight, almost like they are from 2 different pictures.
Also, is the sky the subject? Or the figure? Or the waterfall? I think you need to decide which you are aiming at and construct the image around it. A beach landscape with the waterfall in the foreground would work but trying to squeeze texture out of a bland sky, and make it something it isn't, doesn't really work for me.

I have to agree with Nick, I think the tonemapping was a mistake on this one. It is not offensively bad like some of the tonemap/HDR work that I am sure we have all seen, but it is just too strong an effect here and doesn't hang with the rest of the photograph.
I would love to see a straight shot of this scene to compare.
