...or maybe not... there does seem to be a lot of space between them
Something different today, a foray into mono. The harsh, contrasty, midday light gave some strong shadows, silhouettes and rim illumination.... seemed perfect for black and white.
Taken on the Lea Navigation in North London, near Tottenham Hale.
Iso200, f11, 1/640sec, no tripod this time. Actually took my 70-200 lens for this outing, set at 117mm for this shot.
Lovely atmosphere ,well suited for mono
Super capture Dave, the people in silhouette are excellent, the shimmering surface of the canal coupled with the puffs of smoke from the narrow boat give contrasting textures, and that swan almost hidden in the foreground all add up to a great shot!
brilliant comp dave wonderful tones and light a cracking mono top shot
Great image here Dave, and certainly suits the mono.
A super mono, Dave! Love this shot.
This is a really special image Dave !! very well taken
Like it Dave,
A great image, and great in mono, one of my favourite holidays was barging in England, loved my early morning strolls along the tow paths, well captured
Certainly nice and sharp Dave, the light just seems to fall in the right place as the boats are lit up beautifully, very well seen Dave..John
A particularly well composed monochrome image, love the beautiful light and the warm tones.
An excellent composition, Dave, and it works so well in mono. Carol
Wow That is brilliant!
Excellent composition Dave. Mono suits the subject well.
I'm amazed at how well this works in black & white. Super composition, great light and the silhouetted figures add a lovely human touch.
An excellent side lit shot, Dave - and very effective in b/w.
Well composed - as ever - I love the strong lighting on the sides if the boats which contrast so well with the shadows in the bottom right of the image.
The couple probably are together - my wife and I regularly walk canal paths in the West Midlands, usually miles apart because of the camera!!
No camera to be seen here, though!!
A super mono image, well captured
I think it's great - the clear view of the boats contrasts nicely with the silhouette of the people.

Put really well, its a strong and interesting composition that invites the eye in. - gary
I think they were walking apart deliberately to give you a view of the skiff in the distance
Well-composed, some prominent reflections despite the ripples on the water, and enviable light. An image that few people would automatically associate with London, all the better for being an eye-opener therefore.
Great comp and light that works so well. Undoubtedly works as a mono.
I looked back to when I could last find a b&w landscape in your portfolio, had to go back to September...
It works perfectly here - strong light and shadows take on a negative/positive feel, it says cold, and also accentuates the diagonal progression of the far bank, the near bank - and the walkers who stand out beautifully in silhouette against the water. You've timed this perfectly for their stride, both have a foot raised, that conveys brisk movement. You even have a touch of rim lighting catching the lady, which distinguishes her from the slightly darker background behind her outline. And those strong horizontal shadows on 'our' bank ground the image.
I cannot imagine this working nearly so well in colour, too many distractions, probably from the barges.
I've been wondering if lightening the swan would help or hinder, I'm not sure. It's kind of lost as it is, it might be a distraction if it was lighter.
Makes me want to get back onto the canals. Superb shot.
Did you pop into the Princess of Wales along Lea Bridge Road for a pint and some chips after?
A cracker Dave with that rim lighting just lifting it above the ordinary. Now if only that duck was swimming in the opposite dirction and that smoke was blowing horizontally I think you would be on a winner.
lovely mono work
fine result here David like it a lot best go to spec savers looks like 17jan and 116mm have caused you a problem
I looked - I liked - and after reading Moira's comment I really appreciate it.
Nice reflections on this river scene.
Well done. Westernred
This works so well in mono - very atmospheric - the more I look the more I spy!!!
Wonderfully atmospheric and in many ways so very romantic.
Beautiful tones and sidelighting Dave, you can feel the chill in the air.
Strong mono and story telling Dave ( they appear to be going their own ways !
The B and W presentation works well here, Dave, there being a high range of contrast which suits the approach IMHO: love the light here catching on the hulls, the ripples and as you say the the rim lighting on the couple.
And as ever, so well composed, the dark triangle on the lower right balancing with the tree mass top left, the main scene diagonally between the two.
Mean and moody at midday!
The barges and smoke on one side are nicely balanced with the silhouettes on the right.
Nice mono dave, top comp.
A lovely scene, nice reflections, great composition, wonderful light...just have to give it my UA!
Very strong composition, excellent mono. I love this image from the figures to the smoke against the dark trees and the rippled water. There is so much to like that didn't notice the bland sky. I am very happy to give my UA.
I have been looking at this for a good while Dave............ Its superb!
Correction......... Its a GEM
Superb monochrome composition !
Brilliant use of the light Dave, and a beautiful composition too. Perfect in mono.
Congratulations on all your awards Dave! Seems you made the right choice in mono - it works really well! I love these canals and this river - very well composed.
Very atmospheric b/w - I like it a lot
A well composed and balanced mono--very nice indeed
Long shadows and lovely light for midday - I think they've had an argument - he is still angry and has his hands in his pockets. She is ready to reconcile, arms relaxed at sides, maybe ready to reach out - oh my what we can weave in our imaginations when we look at an image.
Very atmospheric and delighful b&w shot Dave, georgeous light in the shimmering water, all together, superb image.
Don't think they've noticed that their Seven Year old son has fallen in the Water Dave
Great shot and excellent Mono, a very nice comp' too.
Dave, awesome work my friend, the lighting, composition and detail is fantastic, perfect in black and white, awards well deserved. A man of many talents.
Perhaps they've got a cob on, Dave?
Either way, great b/w image.
Looks good, Dave. I need a long lens as well, actually I prefer a flexible one(zoom)...but costs too much and too heavy for me, not sure that I can pick it up.. the other option is a light 70-300, I just don't know how much I need the 100-300 part, I can't keep changing lens in the street..
Wonderful mono. You may have a play on PS, try Content aware scale tool.. nothing to lose, if it doesn't work, nobody can see it either.
Wonderful shot Dave, I like it a lot
Lovely atmospheric image Dave. Works well in mono
Terrific Dave - like that very subtle toning
Strong contrast and interesting capture. Not only are you a low light expert but an excellent mono here suggests much wider levels of expertise! A
Such a lovely image - gives a relaxing, comfortable feeling - lots to look at
ps loved your comment
A wonderful phot in B&W
Dont feel much love in the air with these love birds Dave as you say a bit to much distance there I feel, good exposer with a strong contrast nice tones and so does work well in mono
Definitely works well in BW, Dave. I think they could easily be a couple BUT...to me, it looks like she's walking faster than he is...so maybe not
Excellent mono Dave.
Strong shadows, superb light and some atmosphere in the b/g Dave. An excellent b/w picture
Has a hint of sepia. You have had an impressive start with mono and I would be tempted to look at your back catalogue and find a few gems ready for conversion. Regards
You make London look so very beautiful... This is very close to me and I love your image. IB
Excellent mono Dave. Great silhoette but the bridge running through the blokes head is too much of a distraction for me and i see that before anything else but that's just me cos it's taken me 5 minutes to scroll down to this comment box and can't see that anyone else has mentioned it.
Cheers, Trevor, I was aware of it but unfortunately that was where the side light was coming through onto the couple.
Every picture tells a story ! Lots of stories going on in this wintry world being woken up by the sun. I'm wondering about the occupants of the barges as well as the characters walking .
This works so well in mono and the detail in it is amazing. So great to see. Gill
stunning photograph. has a old fashioned feel about it
,well suited for mono.
Dave, you are correct. This is a perfect mono -- great comp.
Great array of barges ,would like to see them in colour.
Hi Dave, and excellent mono shot, a well composed shot.. Congratulation for the awards worth winning.
Great comp and a great mono
What more can I add Dave. A fine quality image, well composed and superbly captured.
Super Monochrome image Rendition ~
A magnificent mono Dave, the light and shadows are fabulous as is the composition. I like the inclusion of the canalside walkers and the graceful swan
Don't know how I missed this but there you go. Beautifully sharp with a great lead in line and depth from the ranked barges. You've dealt with the contrast very well and the rim lighting on the sihouettes is exquisite.
Dave, perfect choice to do mono here dave.............shot has the full spectrum of nono tones and claity........super job.
Superb mono Dave-loads of atmosphere. Yes been campervan for last 15 yrs. Paul
