Valletta, Malta. Bastions surrounding the City lighted up with Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church all decked up for the local feast.

I love Malta (visited in April/May 2010) and this is a good attempt at the exciting world of night photography. I agree with the points already mind. I would like to make a further point:-
Pictures taken at night are fine but this will increase the contrast in the image, meaning everything is either very light or very dark, which is fine. Taking it just 15-25 minutes after sunset will leave some interesting colours in the sky, reds, yellows, blues, oranges as opposed to just plain black. In landscape photography the sky is one of the most important elements of the photograph, to some respect that carries through to twilight photography. Take it just after sunset and see the difference. See my image of Jodrell bank below and you'll see what I mean.

I hope this helps.
Andrew.
I actually thought that, with a few minor alterations, this was an excellent shot as it stood. I can see what you were doing here (it's quite obviously not a landscape), & colour in the sky certainly doesn't help it.
The light is the subject, and the only way to show it to it's full is after dark, as you've done here. I also like the symmetry, given by the centrally placed church. It works in both planes, as the waterline divides it horizontally.
The only alterations I'd make are the level (already mentioned), and the slight over brightness in the river bank (for want of a better term).
Don't beat yourself up about the horizon. None of the modders noticed or corrected it either!! ![]()
