This was a rather dramatic veld fire which threatened to get totally out of control. Firefighters used both fire engines as well as helicopters which scooped up water from a nearby dam in an effort to quell the flames.

Many thanks to all who commented/voted for my recent "Fishing Gannets" photo and especially to Niknut for his UA...was so thrilled!

A good grab shot, very newsy, we get heather fires like this in Scotland, they move with incredible speed.

Thanks for all your encouraging comments/votes. For those who were worried that I was very close to the fire, the wind had changed and it was blowing aaway from me ! In such a rural situation the methods of fire fighting might seem primitive to some, but it has to be viewed in a situation where access is difficult and resources are stetched. ann.

Very good reportage photography, Ann, in that the image allows one to believe one could be standing there actually experiencing this frightening incident.
