These alien like creatures are actually onions. As they grow, the tops, or head of the onion stalk droops down to the ground, and the hook-like appendage becomes a root, and the bed of onions spreads. One we had these in our garden, during growing season, we have never had to buy scallions.

I have just been busy tilling my onion bed for re-seeding.
A bed of onions is so useful what ever the kind.

Walking onions are so much fun-- worth the mess they make of the garden! (easy to remove)--I have heard that they are edible!
