This character sits calmly at the entrance to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and greets visitors. Other figures lurk more warily in the trees beyond.
I like him. He seems to be eyeing us in a very intelligent, slightly ironical, questioning sort of way. Welcoming us, but on Art’s own terms.
V2, V3 - Gradually moving back to show his companions in the background.
V4 - Life Class.
Thanks for looking,
Moira
Edit - my thanks to VivienO for identifying this as Seated figure by Elizabeth Frink.

I think he looks kinda scarey ...
But how did you get so close I think I remember them as quite tall
This is the seated figure right at the entrance, Barbara.
Moira
A super series Moira - I rather like the art class in V4!!!

Makes perfect sense Francesco, and a very interesting observation. He is certainly benevolent, but other.
Richard I suspect that I like V2 best, but I wanted the uninterrupted progression.
Can I add that photographing sculpture is increasingly becoming an obsession for me. It's the challenge of conveying three dimensions in two, and of conveying the character of someone else's creation truthfully, in one's own style and in a different medium.
Thanks folks.
Moira
The soft light under the canopy certainly brings out the detail well. I'm going with V1 but I'd remove the left tree trunk, it catches the eye and hangs onto it.
Nice set and lovely quality especially V1. I also like the varied poses of the class.
Dougie
Dougie, the tree trunks were my main problem there, but they are sort of unavoidable! I did compose this quite carefully to minimise that trunk's impact, and binned a lot of frames where it was more dominant.
Moira
Lovely series, he's keeping an eye on the visitors. I haven't been there for a few years and must make the effort to go back.
Sylvia
V3 for me, I think it has the best composition overall.
Like yourself, I love the idea of photographing sculpture, but find it hugely frustrating, in that it's so hard to isolate most work from often un-suitable and badly chosen locations, but yet giving a sense of scale or meaning, assuming there is meaning to where they've been put.
A probably foolhardy decision, if talking about local councils...
Excellent series of image Moira, for me it has to be V1, he sort of reminds me of the clown in Stephen Kings book 'IT'
Hugh
Thanks again folks. Barry I agree, location is tricky and often very badly judged too. There are a number of works that I've tried and totally failed on - background clutter, awkward angles, shadows falling across where you don't want them...

I'll just point him in your direction when he finds that one, Robin!

Very eye catching subject matter Moira, very well photographed.

He looks quite friendly to me, and yet quite ancient at the same time. Artists today don't put drapes or fig leaves on their work!
Thanks for confirming that Vivien, I thought this looked like Frink's work but couldn't find confirmation. There's a lot of information about some exhibits, nothing about others.

I think he does, too! Great set, and think V2 for me for a bit less scariness.

He does look very erudite Moira, is that Mikbee stripping off in the name of art in v4?! lol
