Haven't posted anything recently but this is my first serious attempt at trying HDR using
Photomatix.
It is obvious to me that you have to be very selective in your subject matter when using HDR, however I personally think it suits this type of image.

Wow, this is amazing! It's really natural looking, and what a great choice of subject. I've yet to try HDR but I plan to soon - strikes me that the inside of a building like this is a good place to start!
blooming heck what a great pic and you used photomatix to - I started on this HDR business and had a lovely old church in mind with a brick interior I will be posting a pic tomorrow - its not dissimilar to your cathedral shot in the roof but mine didnt turn out anything as good as yours - beautifully done and I have to say you have mastered the programme perfectly - well done and I am just so envious
This is a good use of HDR as it doesn't stetch the limits of believability too far. A good way to strat and a great place to practice on.
