Whilst in the meadow yesterday, I spotted this beautiful swallowtail caterpillar, chomping away on a wild fennel stem. On looking closer, I saw that he/she was being watched from above. I took some images as the shield bug went closer to investigate, he decided that it was nothing to worry about, so continued on his way down the stem.

Three fabulous close ups documenting this encounter, the details, colours and clarity are marvellous
Just brilliant, 3 great shots and a great story as well almost like a children's book, 'The Shieldbug and the Caterpillar'.
Andy
What a beautiful caterpillar and a lovely shield bug of course.

Great photos .... I'm envious of the beautiful shield bug .. they don't come in such bright colours here. All I have ever seen is brown, brown and brown. Beautiful in their own way but ... still ... brown!
Fantastic clarity and love the composition / story line of the three shots.
A great sequence Carol
v2 is my favourite of the three

how surprising, I have taken a very similar picture in May (!) in my fennel
And you get this November, must be a real rarity.
both species seem to love the taste.
Superb set. I'm glad the swallowtails are thriving as they are my favourite butterfly. Sylvia
Three stunning quality close-ups here, Carol
I'd be delighted just capture one creature, but again you've presented us with two different species and in the same photo. I've no hesitation in giving these my UA - each image would be worthy of its own ![]()

Caterpillar by Christina Rossetti
Brown and furry caterpillar in a hurry,
Take your walk
To the shady leaf, or stalk, or what not,
Which may be the chosen spot. No toad spy you,
Hovering bird of prey pass by you;
Spin and die, to live again a butterfly.
Inspiring images Carol
