A lovely image with nice tones.....

On my D700 the 70-300 VR works best at around the f10 mark... that said your PF images look great.

i do sometimes use tripod and remote release.........often i leave at home as heavy with many miles to walk......should really make more effort tho'

Besides tripod I use Fast shutter speed 300+ and higher ISO 400 on my Canon.
Others will tell you different.I'm no expert.Nevertheles lovely bird and nice blurred b/g.
