As you say Jeff, there will be dozens of combinations of adjustments you could apply to this.
I've added a mod with just a red curves adjustment and a touch more contrast and brightness. It's not any better, it's just one of the loads of alternatives.

Edit; this is an ideal candidate to use to try out some of the effects in "Virtual Photographer."

Quite a fascinating subject, and very well-taken, but I admit I much prefer the B+W mod done by Cats - I just don't like the red colouring.
