Good morning all,

A quick upload before work!!! Sad

This was taken at Whitstable last monday night... A cold day but such a beautiful sunset..

I took this one to the photo course last thurs as we were analysing photos. The main thing that came out was that the tyre in the foreground didnt fit. yet when cropped it lost impact. I have tried to lighten it but it made the sun look burnt out.... therefore i am putting this up for mod and critique!!

Please let me know what you think..

Regards to all...

PS tooth is a little better Smile

A nice capture as you say not the same without the foreground tyre, something you can try next time, expose for the foreground and drop a 2 or 3 stop grad over the top of the image to stop it being burnt out.
I think you need the tyre as an anchor or stopper to keep you in the image Smile Geoff.

The foreground tyre is the main problem - you need something with a more interesting shape as a silhouette. The sun is also a touch bright - a difficult time when the exposure needs too be less for the sun, but more for the foreground. I would expose for the sun, then lighten later in software where needed.

A great and beautiful shot Lianna - but IMHO I agree with the Paul about the object in the fg - crop it off

Thank you all... There wasn't much on the beach to use as fg interest, for a wide-angle it worked ok... But I liked the idea of a portrait shot! No harm in trying I suppose.. Smile x

I agree with a lot of the above comments, Lianna, it's just that the f/g object is too commanding and rather than guiding the eye into the shot, it blocks it. Good try though, esp. if there was little else to choose instead. Perhaps this is where getting down in the wet on your hands and knees with a really wide focal length would pay off, using the smaller stones and irregularities there for your f/g detail.SmileSmile
Ronnie.

Thanks Ronnie!!!

Hands and knees job would have to be in a wet suit me thinks lol... The beach is majority silt/muddy stuff Sad and that's when the girly girly comes out!!! Don't do yucky mud hehe.

I did get a few more wide angled shots... They will follow x x

Lovely shot Lianna, nice colors, but I agree with Ronnie, there are plenty of smaller rocks that with a wide angle lens could look huge in the frame and if you get a cam with a twisty screen you wouldnt need to get wet too lol Tongue

Great sunset shot Lianna, i would have thought the tyre was a rock had you not said so, so i think it works well as it is.
Nice one Smile

tried to do this earlier, but had to get out with the new Manfrotto an wonderful head that has bankrupted me!! but so well worth it.. to go with the new lens!!
Lianna, do hope that you like the variations? I have cropped, contrasted, 'messed around' with the colours for you, as think it is a bit on the bright side, also the tyre there really has taken away from the sunset that you captured so well then just did a smart sharpen for you..hope this is OK?

I have uploaded a mod.
I like the composition with the stone in the forground, but personally I found the sky a little light, so I copy and pasted the sky (with a feather to soften the edge) then turned the blend mode to multiply to darken it a bit, and ajusted to opacity to suit.
Lovely shot.

Try getting closer to the forground subject and using a flashgun to bring the detal out as a focal point Grin may work for you may not no harm in trying though xx
