Yesterday afternoon I visited the Welney Wetland Centre which is part of Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT).
Here I photographed this family of six Whooper Swans ~ two adults and four cygnets who have recently arrived at Welney after completing a 1,200 mile journey from their breeding grounds in Northern Iceland. This includes a non-stop 700 mile ocean crossing over the North Atlantic. The Whooper swans can complete this section of the journey across the water in as little as 12hours and 40minutes! That is a speed of over 55 miles per hour for nearly 13 hours! It is even more remarkable when you realise that the cygnets are only 2/3 months old. They will over winter at Welney before returning to Iceland in the Spring
