This is a bit of a carrot really - the shot I am really posing will be in version 2 in a moment, but a mono industrial shot will not get anyone looking, so thought I'd put a colourful landsccape with a broody sky.... Smile

This is a simple shot of an oil seed rape field, facming north at sunset.

The one in version 2 is a shot of the docks at Goole, it's an industrial scene with lots of different tones and shapes, had to be HDR because of the silhouette issues of shooting into the sun

It may get it's own place on the gallery one day, but knowing EPZ as well as I do - thought the rape would get you loking Wink

Like the sky and colours in one Ade - also good to see the docks too.
I assume that this is undergoing further work to get your normal punch in B/W?
Regards Richard.

Love version 2. Very much reminds me of a photographer called John Davies. Well done

Underhand and devious, I like it.

I think it would be unfair to consider the rape shot just a carrot though as it is a bold and appealing shot in its own right, but I guess the point is it could be half as bold and half as appealing and it would still get twice as many votes as the industrial scene.

Moving on the industrial scene, I would imagine printed large this would be a very strong image, but on screen I am finding the mono conversion a little flat and slightly lacking in lead in.

You have two relatively featureless areas with the water and the sky and the only element that is bold enough to stop the eye roaming around too much is the checkerboard pattern bottom right. As a result I find myself wondering if it would be better without that or with a stronger conversion to try and amp up the other details.

I would therefore have to say on reflection (or perhaps due to EPZ conditioning) that the field scene is a more accomplished shot of its genre than the industrial one imho.

The checkered danger sign grabs the eye and leads it into the image which indeed has many great tones and levels, the detail is excellent, including the little splash of artificial light in the right centre, remarkably well detailed.
Sadly the image is a boring industrial site with no merit for me other than the great gamut of tones and detail.
Your grabber in Version 1 is very well composed and does of course steal the show Ade, Sorry my friend, I don't think it's anything to do with where it's displayed.

Dougie

More than one way to skin a cat eh nice lead in to the second image good but not one of your renowned strong mono shots. The first one like the strong lines and the menacing sky.
Two for one can,t be bad though.

Have to agree with Douglas here Ade. The industrial site shot doesn't exactly grab a non-connoisseur, whereas the rape shot has loads of colour, lead-in lines & a great sky to boot.
You have a good day at the cricket?

Got me looking....and I like both. Were you stood in the rape field? - if so, I might have been tempted to go a bit lower with the shot to get some larger, in-focus rape as a bonus. (I feel a bit shy, writing a comment on your image like that - I don't feel qualified to recommend anything to such an accomplished photographer as you!!).
