bfgstewMicro Bulb. Had a few minutes so I set up my bellows and shot the bulb out of my mini Maglite, it is only 2mm in diameter and trying to get everything set up, in focus and lit correctly just goes to show this micromacro lark is harder than it seems. I must get my studio sorted, a New Years resolu...

bfgstewGear Train. A close up of a gear from work, when looking at it normaly there seems little or no damage, but when taken with a good macro lens, it becomes apparent, damage has occured. Taken with my Sigma 150 macro and ringflash, handheld.

bfgstewBellows and Time Took another shot using the hand held bellows set up and its blooming hard to get everything in focus at this level, so looks like some photostacking is needed, never the less a shot of my watch bezel, shows how much damage it shows up!!!! I may be getting hold of an Olympus 50m...

bfgstewMacro Bellows Test. Taken hand held with lens hand held on the end of the bellows and ring flash hand held on the end of the lens, plus stopped down with a spare finger!!!!!!!! One of the tiny screws on the bayonet mount on my 50mm lens, not cropped or messed with in PS, straight out of the came...

bfgstewMacro. This believe it or not is a small screw, you can tell the difference between a screw and a bolt by the length of thread, a screw goes all the way along its length a bolt is only threaded part way, 3 times its own diameter. Anyway, this is a 4mm screw, taken using my Sigma 150 macro lens and ...

Flash in the eye

bfgstewPosted this in the gallery but also want you other bloggers to see. A shot of my eye using the homemade ringflash. Set in manual at 1/64th power and camera on 1/250thsec @ f9 hand held.

40 - 365

bfgstewThe number 40, well 40cm to be precise. I haven't really tried my ring flash out much since I finished building it, so I have had a bit of a play today. I decided to take some shots in a pitch black room and see how things come out. This was taken on manual settings on the camera (1/250sec and f9) t...

Completed ringflash

bfgstewAs promised, a picture of the completed flash mounted on camera (forgot to set camera phone to colour DOH) but you get the picture, extremely lightweight, no interference with the lens barrel, complete compatability with the speedlight and it works, and works well. Now to start mass producing them...

Just taken delivery

bfgstewJust had the posty knock the door and my long awaited Xenon ring flash tube has arrived, 32 quid for 100mm dia, 800ws output tube, now the fun starts. I have many ideas in my head of how to house and mount this, but it all seems to alter once you start to do it, sort of evolves as you go along, or...

Mk2 test

bfgstewA couple of images to show how the ringflash is coming on. The first is taken with the SB-600, iTTL hand held using Sigma 150 macro lens. The second is using the ring flash coupled to the SB-600 iTTL. A marked difference, there is still a bit of shadow, but that is down to the ringflash only having ...

Mk2

bfgstewJust finished the conversion of my SB-600 speedlight, well just tested really. I have mounted a small box on top of the flash head, fitted a 6 pin socket to it with 6 wires going into the flash head, these have been connected to the trigger and flash circuits. Now the theory of this is that I can u...

Ring Flash Mk2

bfgstewAfter completing my first ring flash, I found it to big and cumbersome to be used succesfully in the field, plus the speedlight I used was rather old and basic, so exposing for shots is a hit and miss affair, OK if its still life but for bugs and stuff, no chance. Well, as I said for £20 I shall not...

Episode 21

xandaI recently spent my second day in the studio with a new model called Lee. When Lee's shoot was over it was Ruby's turn and we played with the studio's ringflash which was fun. I've now added some angle brackets and white brollies to my portable flash kit. Better than that though I've bought a co...
