Grainy Sunset

conradFrom my iPhone film roll. The phone upped the ISO quite a bit in order to be able to take the shot. And despite the use of noise-reducing software, the picture still looks like quite grainy. But I like it. :-)

Impression: Sunset

conradThe other day there was a sunset with a totally empty sky (except for the sun, of course), I couldn't find anything exciting to serve as foreground interest, and just didn't think that the intended approach to the subject would be very interesting. So I did something I'd never done before: I decided...

iPhoneography Sunset

conradWhat do you do when you've lost track of time and the sunset arrives quicker than you thought, and there's no time to pick up your camera? Well, besides simply enjoying the colour spectacle enfolding before your eyes, you can't, of course, ignore the possibility of having a go at capturing a mome...

Day 212: A dying sun

discreetphoton Thickening fog at the end of the day seemed to sap the strength right out of the sun this evening. I liked the muted quality of the colours that this produced, and decided that the photograph was best left to a plain, uncluttered composition. Incidentally, this is the sort of shot which sold m...

Day 205: Afterglow

discreetphoton After a minor soaking in Leeds, we stopped off on the way home so that I could grab the last of the sunlight in Greasborough. You can still see some of the rain on the right of the photograph. It just needed a cyclist coming up the trail. Nikon D300; Tamron 18-270mm PZD @ 18mm; ISO 320; F/6....

Grab Sunset

conradThe idea I had today to visit a few locations I don't usually pass on my way home and take some photos didn't work out due to traffic queues I really wanted to avoid. So instead of a picturesque route I followed one that didn't have one thing I wanted to photograph. Finally the light went, and su...

Day 190: Thrybergh country park

discreetphoton I can tell you, it was much colder than it looked. Nikon D300; Tamron 18-270mm PZD @ 85mm; ISO 320; F/7.1; 1/640s. VC on. Another image after the break…

Day 189: Elsecar Reservoir

discreetphoton I visited a different location this evening for a walk around. It turned into a really lovely evening, and I even got to see a kingfisher zipping across the pond five minutes into my walk (although that makes my last two attempts to find one even more galling). It’s courtship season for the Gr...

Day 146: The walk of shame

discreetphoton For much of the afternoon, it was grey, overcast and a little bit bleak. I got a phonecall telling me that I didn’t have to give my fiancee a lift home from work today, as a colleague was going to drop her off. So there didn’t seem to be much point in going out. Shortly after that, I got a ...

Day 145: Back to Eastwood

discreetphoton I don’t think that this is quite as striking an image as yesterday’s, but I do like to make the most of these subtle winter colours, so I headed back to the canal basin this evening to see how it looked at the end of the day. It features the same boats, and in the position as they were in yest...

Day 140: Sprotbrough Weir

discreetphoton Sprotbrough’s a very small village between Consibrough and Doncaster, but it’s one I thought had a lot of photographic potential when I drove through a few weeks ago looking for the nearby wind farm. There are two water channels running side by side, with very different characters, and at this...

Photo365 - 356 - Sunset Guitar

PeteIf you've followed my photo365 you will know I'm a fan of shallow focus, and bolting things on the front of a camera that weren't designed to be bolted on. My latest purchase is an 85mm f/1.8 Canon FD lens. You can buy lenses of this type on eBay for far less than the modern versions. And this one i...

Photo365 - 354 - Stand still

PeteI went to Yorkshire Sculpture Park for a few hours today. Took a bag full of Pentax kit and the iPhone. I love using the iPhone. If only you could control focus and exposure - it would be even better. I came back with just short of 400 shots. I saw some new sculptures today by Joame Plensa - I've ...

Day 113: The Wash

discreetphoton Today’s image is a five image vertical stitch of the local weir, which I photographed in closer detail last month. I honestly thought the light would get a bit more dramatic than it did around sunset, but that’s the UK for you. Always a last minute cloud bank. Nikon D300; Tamron 18-270mm PZ...
