Day 201: On the move again

discreetphoton Iíve barely stopped for the last few days, what with my recent secondment starting, and planning various things for the local Photographic Society. Tonight I displayed some on my older work, and it seemed to go down well. I was rather rushed though, so you get this detail shot of my laptop bag. ...

Day 200: Fish

discreetphoton In retrospect, I should have paid more attention to what kind of fish this was, but hey ho. I snapped this while having a walk around Wentworth Garden centre after work today. It was a short walk, as Iíve got loads to do over the next couple of days, but I was quite taken with this little fella. ...

Day 199: Farewell and adieu

discreetphoton Todayís photograph is of a gift given to me by a friend at work. Iíve had a very sudden change of location within the same company which Iím hoping will be a very good opportunity for me. In many ways Iím sad to be leaving though, as itís been a wonderful place to spend the last year, and Iím blo...

Day 194: Catcliffe Glass Kiln

discreetphoton You can see this structure from Sheffield Parkway, and I decided to have a look this week after my third trip down that way. Thereís not much of note around it now other than bungalows, but itís quite a prominent landmark. And it wonít be there forever if the locals get their way. Apparently they...

Day 190: Thrybergh country park

discreetphoton I can tell you, it was much colder than it looked. Nikon D300; Tamron 18-270mm PZD @ 85mm; ISO 320; F/7.1; 1/640s. VC on. Another image after the breakÖ

Day 189: Elsecar Reservoir

discreetphoton I visited a different location this evening for a walk around. It turned into a really lovely evening, and I even got to see a kingfisher zipping across the pond five minutes into my walk (although that makes my last two attempts to find one even more galling). Itís courtship season for the Gr...

Day 188: Angelfish

discreetphoton I spent most of my day hoping to get a glimpse of a kingfisher that didnít show. You canít win them all. Maybe Iím the only one who saw the shape of a fish in these plant stems. Maybe solitary confinement made me nuts. Clearly birdwatching is not for me. Nikon D300; Tamron 18-270mm PZD @...

Day 185: Crab Spider

discreetphoton This little fellow (and he was small, as youíll see if you skip forward a bit) was trucking across the floor of my home today. I relocated him to the sink to see just how close I could get, sticking a +3 dioptre on to the front of the lens, and using a flashgun to negate the daft exposure time...

Day 184: Ridge and furrow

discreetphoton I like the lines of the field echoed in the patterns of the clouds. Another quick one today on my way to work. Nikon D300; Tamron 18-270mm PZD @ 32mm; ISO 200; F/7.1; 1/800s. VC off.

Day 183: A cure for indecision

discreetphoton Todayís title just as easily describes the Tamron 18-270mm PZD as it does my dinner. Itís great not having to sacrifice your options when youíre faced with uncertainty. Nikon D300; Tamron 18-270mm PZD @ 18mm; ISO 800; F/5.6; 1/4s. VC on.

tonyguitarAm in the market for a lens upgrade also and some of the older photogs here in Canada have suggested the Canon 400 4-5.6 usm as very razor sharp lens. My humble reasoning is that extra crisp glass allows closer cropping so the newer Canon 70 - 300 f4 will be my next lens. Surprisingly many have ...

Day 181: Starfish teeth

discreetphoton Detail from the underside of a dried starfish. The area you see here is about an inch across, and was taken with a +3 close-up dioptre bought for £20 mounted on to the Tamron 18-270 PZD. Nikon D300; Tamron 18-270mm PZD @ 270mm; ISO 200; F/18; 1/800s. VC off.

Day 177: Owler Bar

discreetphoton I went to Monsal Dale today with a friend from my local camera club, and despite getting quite a few shots that I liked, it was this one that I liked the best. We started our day in a monsoon, then got clear blue skies, before snow, and broken cloud with some wonderful lighting. We pulled up a...

Day 174: Erosion management

discreetphoton I visited the RPS print exhibition in Barnsley today with a friend, and from there we headed over to the Peak District. We saw a pair of helicopters making regular trips between two points, and went to investigate. It turns out that one of the local reservoirs has been silting up, so the helic...

Day 173: Natural grace

discreetphoton Whilst my fiancee was trying on wedding dresses, I took a look around Sheffieldís Botanical Gardens. This young fern drew my eye, and I spent quite a while choosing the best combination of focal length, aperture and working distance to get the effect I wanted, with the emphasis on getting a pl...
