I think there's only so far you can get by just taking photographs. Without some kind of feedback, you're just going to be taking the same stuff again and again and making the same mistakes again and again. Feedback doesn't have to be discussion with other photographers but I do think you need to look at their work, at least. And look with a critical eye, considering how that photographer might take your photos better and, conversely, how you might take theirs better. Simple repetition without feedback is as likely to breed bad habits as good ones.
