Dovercourt Bay near Harwich, Essex is not the most wonderful of locations but its where I live, and so its here I took my first shots with a digital camera.

Harwich is a busy coastal town and international port located on the estuary of the rivers Stour and Orwell in north-east Essex, England. The town is a historically important port which has provided a sheltered anchorage for shipping through the ages. The old town of Harwich is a conservation area containing many historic buildings. The neighbouring town of Dovercourt, while appearing much more modern, actually merits a mention in the Domesday Book.

Dovercourt, well known for being the actual location for Maplins Holiday Park in the BBC sitcom Hi-De-Hi, is perhaps better known today for its blue flag status.

With many restaurants and hotels along the coast in the town there's plenty of opportunity to grab a bite to eat.

Just down the road in Harwich there's plenty to see, including the Redoubt Fort and the National Wireless and Television Museum.

Here is what some people say about Dovercourt:

Robin Wenlock
I lived in Dovercourt for 42 years and moved away 14 years ago by come back and enjoy the beaches I have a little dog and she enjoys the beaches in the summer we use the west end near the holiday campsites. We have just spent a week at greenacres caravan park under canvas and enjoyed every minuit of it. We walked the seafront to Harwich and enjoyed it.WE WILL BE COMING BACK IN THE SUMMER AND AGAIN IN OCTOBER NEXT YEAR

Rob Millard
I love going to dovercourt, the best beaches in Essex by a long shot. Clean, safe and NOT commercialised keep it that way.

Mel Smith
Living locally, you tend to take the beach for granted. It really is a very therapeutic place, winter, spring or summer. I would hate to live inland!

Ray Geordie Horn
The beaches at dovercourt are superb and still the same as in the late eighties when I worked at the holiday camp wye eye man

Geordie

Dovercourt beach is also popular for it's beach huts in this quiet and picturesque area.
