United KingdomTravel and landscape...
A good friend lent me her 35mm camera in 1996 and my view of the world was instantly changed.
At that time I was fixing cars for a living and also playing guitar in a rock band. Two years later in 1998 our band signed a major record deal and toured the UK; reaching number 19 in the UK charts and reaching a wider audience via TV and radio (TFI Friday, Radio One, XFM, etc.). During this time my photography was mostly experimental black and white, but I have to admit, at that time I didn't really know what I was doing!
In 1999 the band signed another major deal in the USA, which involved even more touring and recording. I designed the 2nd album artwork for the band utilising my black and white photography. This involved 130 image layers in Photoshop and time crunching PC power - wish I had my Apple Mac back then! It drove me mad but looking back was a very good lesson in Photoshop techniques.
During 1999 and 2000 I discovered slide film, e.g.: Fuji Velvia and Provia, and started photographing more still life, travel and landscape images. Fuji Velvia was a huge lesson in getting the correct exposure!
In 2002 our band lost it's USA record deal after which I lost my sense of direction; it was a difficult time. I immersed myself in photography and found it to be a great source of detachment. Soon enough my images started selling regularly and I haven't looked back since!
