Editing Photos - do you actually "enjoy" it?
Well, I am not sure what your understanding of editing is. Deciding what to keep and what to trash. This seems to be a very limited view of what editing is.. By common consent, editing is defined as selecting and preparing media. So although deciding what to keep or what to bin is one stage of editing, it also includes adjusting images to suit your purpose.

lightroom vs photoshop
There is often confusion between editing and manipulation. I agree with everything you say. The scope and capability of Photoshop is astounding. I started using it in 1991 (version 1!) when we used to develop colour films in hotel rooms, scan the resulting negs via PS, noodle with the levels and unsharp mask and then transmit them to London from all over the world. The modems we used then we...

Adobe twists the knife even more............
That is good news, I'm very much the same as Dave_Canon on this. In my case because of hardware purchase timing I probably wouldn't have updated my CS3 suite otherwise.

Lightroom query
I use OnOne PhotoTools 2.6 and will shortly be upgrading it to the totally new build. I use it from PS although it is available from LR too. I understood that the Layers plugin for LR would simply import from LR and so be just like edititng in PS. If you have PS then there is no need for OnOne layers? I don't know.

Whats peoples views on the combination of Lightroom 3 with Elements 4, though am wondering if I should convert to Elements 9 or even wait for 10 to come out this autumn. I dont really use layer masks much as still dont understand them. Any thoughts?

Serif PhotoPlus x4
I used to use PhotoPlus x3 and I can't say I ever had any problems with it. A friend installed it on his machine, which was already equipped with the then current version of Elements and he reckoned the two were comparable. I've never used Elements myself, so I can't comment first hand.

Aperture or iPhoto, any luck with either.
After reading this topic I have downloaded a trial of Pixelmator and I have been very impressed. The new updated version to be released soon sounds even more impressive. This program is for Mac only though. Well worth a trial.

Lightroom or Camera Raw with Photoshop CS4
You could consider converting to Adobe DNG in Lightroom so that you can again embed the develop settings in the Raw file.

Shoot RAW or Shoot JPEG?
Here's my take on the original question. I was never bothered about using raw because the processing seemed too much trouble - well, I take photos for fun not hard work. But when I once tried shooting raw+jpeg I was amazed when viewing the photos side-by-side, as taken without any processing, how much more detail was in the shadows and highlights of the raw shots. Well, detail doesn't always ma...

levels...
I agree that each layer should be adjusted separately but it is always advisable to check the levels for the whole image after flattening also, especially if you have changed the opacity of any of the layers.

Shooting in RAW only or with jpeg?
Peter, That makes perfect sense. It's horses for courses. Jpeg perfectly OK for initial evidence. Really the only reason for preferring Raw over Jpeg is that it seems daft to pay a lot of money for a sophisticated camera and then throw away most of the data that it captures and settle for second-class images. But, if this doesn't sound a bit Irish (after all, it is St Patrick's day), i...

Here's another (easier?) way. Make a duplicate layer on top of the one you're working on. Switch off the top layer & make the 2nd one active. Do whatever adjustments you need to make the area you're interested in look right. Now switch the top layer back on & make it the active layer. Make your selection as before & hit Delete. The area you're interested in will now show through from the 2nd, a...

Lightroom 3, what have I done?
Does anyone know how to import DNGs into Lightroom 3? I already exported some images out of Lightroom 2 as DNGs on my old computer. Now I am trying to import them into Lightroom 3 on my new computer but they don't show up when I go to import and select the folder that they are in.
