I am sure that you apreciate that this is a technique that was originally a darkroom technique and used for a number of reasons. Apart from local contrast adjustments, it is commonly used (particularly by B&W photographers) to create a lighter path to draw the eye to the main point of the picture. This may also be achieved by darkening other areas or both. You do need to understand what you are...

D-lighting pros and cons?
Thanks for the info everybody. That makes it a lot clearer. In case you're curious, I do shoot mostly in RAW and do my processing in Lightroom, but sometimes I use RAW+JPG mode as well, especially if I'm shooting in monochrome as sometimes the camera will set things in a way that I like and can find hard to recreate manually in Lightroom!

In-camera sharpening of Raw files
Thanks for all of that info'. It was really good of you to go into such detail. I hate it when things like this happen. I think I understand, then I misunderstand one little thing that makes be think I have misunderstood everything. Your post has clarified matters, however, and so I think I am back on track again. Nikon D700
I'm still waiting for my 24mm-120mm f4 lens had my 700 nearly 4 weeks now and having to use my old DX lenses. Couldn't decide between that one or go for 24-70 f2.8 wish I'd have gone for 24-70 now I bet I wouldn't have to wait so long.

Updating ACR in Elements 7
Many many thanks Camay, you have saved my sanity, downloaded the DNG converter and it works perfectly with my Raw files in PSE7. Was reading in a magazine of somebody else having the same problem updating RAW and they were given the same answer, that the version is too old. Thanks again to everybody for their efforts. Geoff

What will Canon do about the D800?
Pixel binning will allow the user to have the benefits of very high resolution or very low noise depending on their requirements. I think this may be the basis on which the 41Mp Nokia sensor for camera phones will be operating. As there is no optical zoom, resolution will be reduced when you use the digital zoom, thereby keeping the noise level the same and you will still get a decent photo...

It's a new camera and Adobe always take a wee while (but not usually too long) to catch up. Wouldn't be surprised if there is an update available within a few weeks.

CS6 . . . opinions anyone?
Yes it's good that some of Lightroom's better features are making the move to PS. I am on the fence about the darker LR inspired interface which has also crossed over to other CS6 programs such as AI
