Where Can I Get a Canon AE1 Repaired?
The empty battery compartment may be a clue here... Struggled to get one today, nothing in the shops ("battery for a what?"), no UK sellers on eBay but found a UK website that sells them. One Duracell 28L on order. Doesn't your DIGITAL take batteries then ?No, but that isn't working either. It won't turn on for some reason...

Quote:Good point, although the D90 ..........no MLU, so the image quality might not be comparable when used with certain lenses, and certain shutter speeds. I understand what you say about body material etc, but in the D90 if you put it in live view will it not have a form of mirror lock up? My view is that canon or Nikon do not compete directly, 450D lower in cost but very close in fun...

canon AE1 lenses
Look on ebay, you will find EOS>FD adaptors. Like others have said, there are plenty of disadvantages. I'm sure the cheap adaptors have a significant drop in optical quality too. I think there will be a crop factor too??? So [maybe] goodbye to wideangle lenses. There were some Canon specific adaptors from Canon for the top end lenses. - long lens L series etc I think there pretty rare. I...

Servicing old cameras
£150 sounds very expensive - the camera shop may be farming it out and taking a cut. I use an excellent independent chap in Birmingham. To give you an idea he will service a Hasselblad kit (80mm planar lens, body and film magazine) for £85. And he does know what he is doing, he just has low overheads. I would imagine a complete service on an OM1 would be around £40 - £60 (inc lens.)...

while it could well have a life of another fifty years there will be little or nothing to put in it in less than half that time for sure. ROTFLMAO

What's your favourite camera?
Pentax ME Super. A wonderful little camera, which just fitted perfectly in the hand and handled superbly. When I accidentally smashed mine up, I replaced it with a P30t - very good, but just not the same. Current favourite, Minolta Dynax 7. All the controls fall to hand very well and it has a reassuringly solid feel to it. Doug

If you are beginer and ready to learn fundamentals of photography, you should use a manual camera, as many people suggested you. But, after some time you will wish more... So my opinion is: buy used autofocus camera, and in the learning period use it in manual mode. Later you can use many features that camera has. I purchased used Minolta 7xi, with zoom lens, and paid them about 150 Eur, on Eb...

Your first SLR camera?
I used to have an SRT101 about 30 years ago. Absolutely brilliant camera. Those Rokkor lenses were pin-sharp & the metering was infallible. Sold it to my mate & it's still going strong.

I have an Olympus OM1 with Olympus 50mm f1.8, and Olympus OM10 with 50mm f1.8 plus a 28mm f2.8 Sanwa, OM fit, and the OM10 has the manual adapter which I purchased recently. Everything in good condition, optics clean and clear. Make me an offer. You can use Paypal.

First love
When I was young, I used to dream of having a Minolta SLR with TTL metering, and as a pocket camera a Rollei 35. My first SLR was a Pentor without TTL metering, but my second SLR (gift from my parents when I got my diploma) was a Minolta SRT 101b, and I loved it! And some time ago, before my photography turned digital, I bought a used Rollei 35b, which I used until I got a digital compa...

The Canon AE1 takes a lot of beating, for the price. Look in last Month's Black & White magazine and you will find a two page spread on AE1's and what good second hand value they are.

What doe it all mean
Hey Anne so was I. I know this is all very hard to get your head around. I hope your course goes really well. I learnt my photography with an old manual camera and a hand held meter, and that's how I learned all this. The camera was an old Zeiss Contina from 1952 and it had a neat mechanical method of locking aperture and shutter so that when you changed one the other changed too so the ra...
