This book is really easy to read and the author has made the usual technical wording very clear and easy to understand. All the functionalities of the camera are covered in detail and the colour photos illustrate the points made well. The layout is neat, easy to work through and is organised well. Canon EOS 400D

The Canon EOS 400D, called Digital Rebel XTi in North America and EOS Kiss Digital X in Japan. A mid-range digital single-lens reflex camera first released on August 24, 2006. An improvement of the 350D with a 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor, a larger continuous shooting buffer, an integrated image sensor vibrating cleaning system, the precise 9-point auto focus system from the EOS 30D, improved grip, and a bigger 2.5-inch (64 mm) LCD with 230,000 pixels. The 400D uses the DIGIC II image processor, as is used in the 350D. It was succeeded by the Canon EOS 450D in April 2008.

Canon EOS 5D

The Canon 5D is now a modern classic. It was the first Prosumer Canon full frame digital SLR that most keen amateurs could afford and it rewarded them with smooth 12.8 megapixel files. The area where if wasn't so strong were focusing and frame rate. It struggles in low-light to focus and chugs along at a poor frame rate of around 3fps. This camera was a benchmark for Canon and certainly there are many still going strong to this day on their second and third shutters.

This is the samples page on the Canon Japan website, given the way this has been populated in the past I wouldn't hold out hopes for a RAW image at high ISO anytime soon though. Am I missing something with this? I can only see 600x400 pixel images. The highest ISO one being 12,800 - which looks very clean. But how could you tell at that size?

Everything said already in this thread is good gen. Eventually it has to come down to your choice, to suit your needs. As both of the cameras you are looking at are good ones, the most decisive factor is the feel of the camera in your hand. Hold on to both of them for a few minutes in a shop and buy the one that 'feels right' in your hand. If neither feels right, expand your list. If you don't ...

Thank you very much I am definitely liking the sound of the 350D from what I have looked at so far, if I can afford it, if not maybe the 300D which will hopefully go down quite a bit when the 350D comes out in March. A lot of people seem to be very happy with the 300D I will go and have a feel and c what I think in the next couple months. Thanks again for everyone's help.

I've seen loads of excellent photo's from the 300D, and all of them have been on here, as regards to quality and level of photog, I don't see any difference between the 300D and 20D, am pretty sure they could both produce the same photo with my level of photog anyway (which is very VERY little) Regards Craig :o)

I have 2 1dmkii bodies and 1 20d, usually i pack the 20d instead of the second 1dmkii for 2 reasons the 20d has less iso noise at iso 800 and 1600 the 1dmkii has a focus issue in bad light or nightime outdoor shots as it has a phantom delay before turning on the flash illuminator of around a 1/4 of a second, the 20d has none and locks on faster when you need the illuninator for focus...Why ? ...

What defines a pro photographer? Do you have to be doing it as a full-time job, have a degree, or just making money at it? Anybody care to throw around some definitions? ;)

You may be correct I saw this one on Ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=30070&item=3867181499&rd=1 the item which says for any EF body but he mentions he has used it on a 10D so maybe he has got confused that the 10D's mirror is not the same as the EF body mirrors. Chris

Just loaded up a hawk hunting pic if anyone interested - from the 10d. Need to look at the tracking system in the new camera - and focus points - think i can change these options quite a bit but have not had time to look at it. Thx Sue

The EOS 30 is excellent, though it has now been superseded by the 30V - and that has the new flash metering system also found on the 1D Mark II, EOs 20D, and the EOS 300X.
