If you buy Canon, you'll need to use Canon lenses! Nikon has kept the same lens mount for the past 51 years, so we can use nearly all our oldest lenses on the newest higher-end bodies, such as the D90. Hi pappillon, I have just bought the 550D a few weeks ago and am very pleased with it. I am using it with the kit lens at the moment but it is very sharp with everything I have shot so far. Previously, I had an Olympus which I was sad to sell but as they don't seem to be moving on very fast I decided to change camps.

I have the F/4 IS version and 1.4x converter on my 550D - stunning results and no loss of AF either. The price was right so I went for it and so light, it's rarely on a tripod.

If it doesn't feel 'right' in your hands you will not use it as often as you should and you will kick youorself for making the wrong choice. Go into a camera shop and play with them both. I can't see the price dropping a lot more as the 550D is around £650 or less, the 60D £829 and the 7D £1160, only time I can see them dropping more is when they bring out a new replacement for one of them.

Give me a ubiquitous AA battery every time or even a lithium Iron rechargeable AA battery I wouldn't argue with that. If all else fails you go into any shop and buy new AA's. Which is what is good about the Canon 550/580's

50D currenetly on e bay for £499 on a BIN, 40D for £384 BIN. Had a 550D and found IQ spot on but found the body size a bit limiting in my big hands, hoping to go for either a 7D or 5D Mk2 if selling copyright on a particular image goes to plan!
