I always thought that the EZ series of speedlites couldn't be used with DSLRs, only the EX series - perhaps I'm wrong? Sorta, the 540EZ would be best utilised off camera as a 2nd flash in manual mode since it uses A-TTL not the more recent E-TTL & E-TTL2 [hence the manual mode].

I have a Tamron and i got the same error message. It's a problem with the lens, the contacts don't need to be cleaned like the error message states. I contacted Tamron and then fixed it for free.
