Suggestion of lens
As per Luarels advice, But add this, I use Nikon gear and have the 70-300mm ED/VR lens, Its a great lens and I use it for many different purposes, Anything from portrait to sports and pet photography ie: Cats & Dawgs.....:) So I can say first hand that the Nikkor 70-300mm ED VR is a good all round lens and a bargain at its price point.....!!! I have heard very good reports on a first hand...

A new camera?
The only issue with the FZ45, is that it has no hot shoe. The FZ100 does.

dSLR -- which one to choose?
You are not going to go wrong with either. The D5000 is, of course, an old obsolete model - but it is still as good as it was before it was trumped. The D3100 is the latest model at that level. Now, don't take this the wrong way - but if you have to ask the question, then the entry level is the right one for you just now. Sure, in 2 or 3 years you might be spending £6000 on whatever has supe...

Sir, Hats off to your excellent detailed review. I'm an enthusiast considering Nikon D5100 and Canon EOS 550D as they are priced closely. However, I'm really unable to settle down with either of them:D. Could you please let me know the best option according to you and if possible please post a comparison of both. I would want Excellent Image Quality, Accurate color reproduction, consistent pe...

Nikon 70-300 opinion
I have and use a Nikon 70-300 VR and so far very impressed with the overall quality of the results both on my DX and FX bodies; so far I haven't used the Macro setting with or without an extension tube but judging by the quality of the lens I wouldn't anticipate a problem. Peter

Nikon 50mm f/1.8 D AF Lens
On your camera, being a DX format camera the 50mm will be a short telephoto, just like the 55mm setting on your existing lenses. The advantages are that it will give better image quality than your existing lenses, and having a maximum aperture of f1.8 means you can do very shallow depth of field Something that a lot of people never talk about on here is the fact that irrespective of what eve...

Nikon D5000 lens filter
There are a couple of filters types that you can fit, Then leave them in place to help protect the lens front element. 1. a UV s you have suggested. 2. a " Skylight " that I would recommend, As this can help remove the blueish tones from bright blue skies, That can sometimes be visible in the shadow areas of outdoor shots. 3. Is a clear " NC " type that has no affect on the image at al...
Forum: Lenses
Are there any advantages to a dedicated macro lens over a macro prime lens? All macro lenses are primes (the word used on zooms is a marketing lie), and with one exception all of them can be used things other than macro. The one exception is the Canon MP-E65mm f/2.5 which cannot focus to infinity but goes beyond other macros to 5:1 magnification. I also read somewhere that ring flashes ...

Bit of help for a newbie
Or you could go the other way, and get a decent mid range body and pair it with a 50mm lens, which will produce similar quality images to the 70-200 for bargain prices, but you have you use your feet instead of zooming, and you are swapping the telephoto benefits for shallower depth of field/faster lens benefits.

For all you NIKON users...
Congratulations on the win James :D When you entered did you (Wade) read through the T&C's ? as more than likely it would have held a clause re the "standards of entries". If there isn't such a clause (and since you paid the entrance fee in good faith) then the legality of the judges amending the prize awarded is questionable to say the least. Check your copy of the entry for for the T&C...

Nikon has announced the new Nikon D5100 Digital SLR and we have published our preview of the new DSLR

You only have until 31 October to enter the Nikon 'Cool' competition.

Nikon reduce the price of the Nikon D5000 by over £100.
Reviews

Joshua Waller reviews the new Nikon D5100 Digital SLR - fresh design by Nikon enables a smaller body.

Here we test the new D3100 entry-level Nikon DSLR with a new 14.2 megapixel sensor, Live View and a full HD 1920x1080 / 1080p, 24fps video recording.

A 5.5x telephoto zoom lens for DX cameras with Vibration Reduction which starts where bundled kit lenses stop extending your range through to a super-telephoto 300mm.

After retiring the D40, Nikon have replaced it with the D5000. What does the new model do that the other didn't and is it worth upgrading?
