To IS or not to IS
I use IS if the subject is static, like a building, and I've zoomed out quite a long way. I turn it off for candids and street otherwise you miss the moment while waiting for the IS to settle.

Micro 4/3 for professional use
Thanks Pete. I never use JPEG, if RAW is available. But it looks like the RAW images are also corrected in-camera. That said, I used my Pen with old manual Canon FD lenses and never found any issues. So correction can't be overly drastic. But it leads, I guess, to a whole new discussion! What matters more - the end result, or how you get there? ;)

legacy lens on dslr
Thanks for the helpful comments. I had a play over the weekend and found that I could get reasonable results by using a tripod and 10sec shutter release. My main problems were with fringeing when taking shots on brances against the sky. shots against grass & foliage were slightly soft but ok.thanks again. John

What do people have against EVF...?
For me it is a case of apples and oranges, EVF can be useful. I have Canon slrs and as a walk about an Olympus EPL1 with a VF3 EVF. ( By the way the standard lens on the EPL1 which feels really flimsy delivers outrageously sharp images for a camera and lens kit that cost me £249!- see Innerleithen Chimneys on my portfolio) Without the EVF the EPL1 is half the camera, with it , you ha...

What MIRRORLESS camera do you have?
Does anyone know what sort of life it is meant to have? Panasonic gave me a free 5 year warranty with my purchase of my G2 last year, Panasonic must think its very good :)

When using Panasonic lenses on a Pen camera you have the choice of which IS to use, either the IS in the Pannie lens OR the IS within the Pen camera, never both together or the Pen will see the image movement created by the in lens stabilisation as camera shake and try to correct it, they will be working against each other. If you find that the IS in the Pannie lens seems to be more effectiv...

Olympus E-PL3 Focus Problem
Why isn't there a smiley face for 'puzzled' There is - in fact there are two types. But you have to be a member of the secret e3 group on EPZ to use them. Oops......... I think I've blown it! Sorry Pete.

Canon 5Dmk3
I guess it probably depends on whether you're going to deliberately shoot in the rain or whether you just need the camera to cope with the time taken to pack it away if an unexpected shower arrives. I've never had a problem with the latter for any camera either. I haven't attempted the former and wonder how practical it would be anyway once rain hits the lens. When shooting weddings in the rai...

New m43 bodies & lenses
Ah but Paul, the Olympus camera offers in-camera IS that works well those lovely manual lenses etc, while the Panasonic offers the EVF and in the past the better focusing. EVF or IS, I would like a viewfinder, but I also like IS, how can I decide which is best... Got to admit, I love inbody IS John and the new Pens even include a built in flash so they now have wireless capabilities as well,...

Thanks for your thoughts all of you. My main experience of macro + flash was with my Canon T90 and Canon ML2 ring flash which worked superbly. The current Nikon macro-flash set-up is definitely out of my price range but looks fantastic. I would like a dedicated flash system and don't really want to go down the manual flash route. So...I think I am looking at a Nikon SB unit that doesn't cos...

The Giottos Vitruvian VGR range offers a tripod and monopod in one. Two models are available and Matt Grayson tries out the carbon-fibre version.

Tripods are an integral part of photography, but good quality doesn't have to cost the earth. Here we test three all under £150.

Selecting the right tripod can be a minefield. So we've got three here for around £200 to see which offers the best value for money in construction, features and ease-of-use.

With a name sounding like a pirate confirming the focal length of his lens, you'll be pleased to know that the Epson Stylus Photo R2880 is far more serious than this intro. Matt Grayson investigates.

Being the market leader in the fastest growing sector of the photographic market is a tough title to hold on to, especially with most major camera manufacturers announcing new entry-level products this year.
