Hot weather, clouds of petrol fumes, gravel and muck churned up and glossy cars screaming past - a great day out for anyone, and we wanted to take some pictures of all this going on.

A photographer's guide to what's on around the country at the weekend

As well as an entertaining day out, an Airshow also provides a great but photographically challenging subject. Here's how the Pentax K20D can make the event much easier.

Advice re action photography please
I agree there. What many people don't stop to think about is that if you are wanting to freeze fast action (in fact it doesn't have to be particualry fast for this to apply), the necessary shutter speed is often way into territory where VR is not necessary.

Low reaction to action pics, whats wrong?
I have not tried the flare effect in photoshop something to try. For me the fun is in trying. There is so much in photography I have not tried and I do value your comments. I had a look at your website, and you have some good up close photo's that work well so I will have a go. My next challenge sports wise is to get some shots for a spot the ball competition I need to create for a youth foo...

Tips for greyhound photography
@steve_eb - Hey Steve, just a pointer if you shoot in raw and dont edit your photos in photoshop or similar they will always appear a little soft focus and colours a little drab. This is because no editing is done in camera.

What is it about sports photography?
"The old 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder' adage has never been truer than with sports photography. A competition to win a photo pass for an NFL game at Wembley was won by a photo that left a lot of people scratching their heads. If you've got access to Facebook, here it is - winning photo " looking at that shot i SHOULD of entered mine!! lol I like to think there were a few entered ...

Motorsport photography. The next step?
Blagging the first trackside pass is the trickiest part - after that it gets easier! To get my first media pass at Rockingham Speedway, I managed to use a combination of: example of work from public areas; promise of free use of some images; old boy net; the blarney; getting a sympathetic ear at just the right time. Once done, I used those images to tout for sponsorship and had a newspaper and ...

A tripod is great for long-focus lenses but does stop you moving to follow the action. Also, if you go to football matches, it has been known for the ball to come your way! For goalmouth incidents I used to stand on the edge of the penalty area, as near to the bye-line as I dare, prefocus on the penalty spot, and hope that I could follow the action with half a turn of the focussing either way. ...

I would probably let the competitors know you will be using a strobe flash and where you will be, if the trails are tight through the trees, it could put them off. You'd get some good results though.

Action Shots!!!
I agree too with (most) of the advice, I would add that if there is a lot of 'shutter lag' then by going on to manual focus & exposure settings you may find the lag reduced (as the camera has less calculations/focussing etc. to do), practice plenty & try to work out how soon to press the shutter before the optimum point (obviously following the shot through) & you may be able to capture the sho...
