I have not built one but have used one in a studio. A small group of us from my Club hired a professional studio for half a day. We had two models (male and female) and a motor bike. There was a huge range of lighting available and wind simulator. It did not cost that much to hire spilt 6 ways and on a Sunday. Dave

Beginner needing help with lighting
As well as flash lighting, you can use much cheaper bulb constant lighting, though flash is good for freezing movement and stopping pupils from shrinking in the bright constant lighting. How big is the subject you are shooting? is it table top products/pets etc or full length people shots? Do you want bright fashion shots or moody one light images? Stuart

Lighting problem
Thanks everybody for your comments and suggestions. The actual studio has been set up just under 12 months now. I originally went on a Calumet Studio lighting course to get an idea of the basic setup. To be honest, the girl that is taking the photos at present has not looked after the equipment and the backdrop is certainly not ideal as it shows in the photo. It was originally set up with a ...

Chromakey green screen
Tom got the Green backdrop.....not sure its going to be any better than white....done a few quick shots .. and not too pleased with them... think it might be a pig in a poke... more photography stuff that may not see light of day too many times... but we will wait and see....Cheers....

Even though our studio is upstairs I don't think that puts people off. Our gallery and studio are in an old building with the original stained floor boards with a grand staircase going up to the studio which most people love, and no one has ever mentioned it being a problem. The clients that do have a photo shoot all comment on how nice the studio is, they get on great with our photographer, an...

RE: Alternative models
Blue Carrot Studios in Nottingham advertise themselves as Alternative and Fetish studios, I looked at them last year when I was looking for a interesting venue to shoot a Dark Fusion dance group They have (had) models on their books that you could hire at the same time as the studio, I believe some of them were also TFP as well I'm not sure if they are still going as the web site seems to...
Forum: Event Photography
Yes, I agree, two lights as the main, and use the speedlite on the highest stop behind the subject, and it will highlight the background as well as give a nice highlight around the edges of peoples heads to give a more interesting group shot, that's if you place the flash in a correct position. I'm investing in the 500/500R, how is the kit so far? How much was the power pack? Or was it incl...

Taking portraits at home
Thanks :) No I didn't, the room is entirely white, including the floor so maybe that helped, but I just stood her in front of the window but at the back of the room so the light was softer and that was it.

Horse/dog show
Are you going to be a frequent attendee of the horse shows? If the answer is no, why not try renting a lens. Even if you still wish to buy at least you would have tried it. I own the Canon 70-200L F2.8 MKII and love it. And would recommend to anyone! I would not personally get the non IS or f4 version of this lens! Sigma have a reasonably priced equivalent of the mkII. Here is a review of th...

Just to say thank you to everyone who commented to this thread and also those who PM'd me:P We didn't move the hide in the end, but because it is sited at the bottom of a small slope, I was able to cut a low level flap in it and lower the perch areas to about 12/18 inches above actual ground area. This means I can bring a natural backdrop into play:) A square of white painted hardboard c...
