To over expose or not, that s the question.
Well said that Man, and exactly what my way of thinking about photography is. If we all followed the same route as each other we might as well bahhhhh along the way like sheep. what makes the greats of photography or art great, there unique way that's what. experiment with photography and find your own way, you never know you may be that next famous photographer that has a unique way i...

d3s or d3x - need advice.
Maintenance of apparent image scale during focus pulling is dear to the heart of every cinemaphotographer and is one reason why movie lenses are so much more expensive than stills lenses. The lack of breathing is one thing that makes the Zeiss 100mm macro lens so convenient for close-up work. As I said, it is also the reason Nikon introduced the Mk 11. Getting technical the Mk 1 breathes a...

Many years ago I had a camera without a meter, I had a hand held one but more often than not I guessed it. I used b/w and negative film. 250th & F8 was used widely. I've just had a very quick look on Ebay and there's a lot of hand held light metres there and here's an example. This ones not in the best of condition but still works apparently. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WESTON-MASTER-Uni...

A couple of points from me: 1. Use the lens you have. A lot. Then you can decide whether you more often need wider or longer focal length to capture what you shoot, you will have your answer as to which lens to get next. But then M42 screw lenses are cheap as chips, so you could probably afford one longer and one shorter lens. (for better quality, maybe look for old Pentax screw lenses, ...

Snowy tips.
Don't trust the view on your LCD, check the histogram. What looks "perfect" on the LCD may well be over-exposed, with blown highlights. Allow the equipment suffcinet time to aclimatise with a cold environment if coming from a warm environment, and visa versa.

Trip to Iceland with my Nikon D90
I understand how frustrating the gift shops were (I hate them) but at Gulfoss and Geysir, the attractions were yards away. We ended up about 20 minutes walk from the Gulfoss visitor centre, wading through knee deep snow to get some shots of the Icelandic ponies (who were also avoiding the gift shops). At Geysir, I had a quick hot chocolate before spending the rest of the hour or so watching and...

2011 was probably my least productive year for photography, i seemed to do more reading about it than actually producing images! Anyhow, this is probably my favourite...just a candid from a short trip to New York this year, taken in a second hand book shop

My view on it is this: A limited camera will restrict the type of shots you can do well. If you stay within those limitations, you can produce pictures as good as any more expensive camera. A more fancy camera with a better lens will open up a wider range of shots that you can do well, and more easily. I speak from experience here - I used to use an all manual Practika MTL, and my earliest p...

New York Advice Please
Also while you are there, if you are at all into jazz you need to get yourself up to the Zebra Lounge in Harlem. You can book a table for dinner for not a lot of money and it gives you prime position. Robbie and I had a brilliant time there when we went.

How much luck do you have
What I can't get my head round is this question - where does opportunism end and luck begin? Or is it the other way round? I regard myself as an opportunistic photographer, but I have never put opportunities down to luck. Maybe I should?

Canon 5Dmk3
I guess it probably depends on whether you're going to deliberately shoot in the rain or whether you just need the camera to cope with the time taken to pack it away if an unexpected shower arrives. I've never had a problem with the latter for any camera either. I haven't attempted the former and wonder how practical it would be anyway once rain hits the lens. When shooting weddings in the rai...

Long focal legth
Of course I'll stick with the Sony Alpha 55. A really great APSC Camera. With the Tamron 10-24mm wide angle zoom I have on it most of the time, it makes a great combination. The focal length continuity is very usefull when I take regatas pictures, or other sea event pictures like Vindsurfing or Kite surfing races or training sessions. Such subjects tend to move back and forth all the time ...

IR - can it be made into colour?
I thought that's what you'd be doing. I've no solution just was wondering if I was right about your plans. I Googled this a few minutes ago. It seems to suggest that they are trying new techniques to achieve better night time shots but not there yet with colour. Conventional infra red illuminators have a single power setting full ON. Objects that are close to the camera are more brightly il...
