Read all of the fore going with a lot of interest. It takes me back to the 60's(aren't I old:))when one of my ex-brothers in law came and told me he had just bought a Leica, so now he would be taking fantastic photos. Knowing he knew very little about photography, I tried to explain some of the basic's. Aperture/shutter priority, DoF, ASA and different film speeds, well I think you all u...

Totally agree Barry (believe it or not) A friend of mine just traded a 1D Mk2 in for a 20D as she couldnt lug the 1D around all day. Similarly she shoots with Sigma lenses because the L ones are just too heavy for her. Horses for courses and still produces cracking shots ;-)

Education Vs Equipment
Personally, I'd forget about the university route but don't rule out part-time evening courses. I did this back in the late 60s and incidentally met my wife-to-be. Result!! :) However, suit yourselves on this! ;)

Camera Make
Majority of photographers like to know what camera make and lens was used. The rest is upto the person submiting the images on whether he/she desides to give more info. If Exif has not been omitted then it should be easy to right click and find out. But best if within the image on forum. I been photographing for quite a few years and I always like to see the above. Snobbery or anything else h...

I have a collection of old 1950`s Mamiya range finder`s, some are very rare today, but these where from a period when German engineering was king and the quality of Japanese workmanship was pretty poor by todays standards. If you wanted a decent reliable range finder then there`s was not such a great deal to choose between and it was another decade before decent camera`s from Japan started t...

Permit or Confiscation of equipment
Yes, it is a crime! The 'Public Stupidity Act of May 2006, section 5, paragraph 3' clearly states: All persons carrying and using, or suspected of carrying and using, a camera or any equipment or article deemed photographic (but not videographic) for any reason - personal or otherwise, proven or unproven - by the empowered member of public present shall without resort to common sense or...

Does it matter what camera you use?
I don;t think it matter as long as you're comfortable enough with whatever you use that you can do it intuitively. I like this quote. "Concentrate on equipment and you'll take technically good photographs. Concentrate on seeing the light's magic colors and your images will stir the soul." I'm using this as a mental brake every time I start a new bout of EAS, equipment aquisition syndrome...

Loads of helpful advice from everyone so good luck hope it goes well for you. The best advice I got from a freind who was a very succesful pro sadly now deceased is the best shots come when you have taken the time to get to know your subject and your client. Camera Insurance
Specialist camera insurance has one extra benefit - liability cover, even for amateur use. Plus some home contents insurance only cover for a certain amount of gear. (My home contents doesn't provide enough cover, so additional insurance became a need.) SLR Camera Recommendations Please
I don't have a problem with the camera, in fact I quite like it - I have an aperature ring which is one thing a like. I had a play with a Nikon F75 and had to set aperature through the camera. But I find that there are many more lenses for the other brands available (esp. in Ireland). I will keep my Pentax, but if I had my time over I think i'd get a Nikon or Canon both of which I've seen...
