I'd go with strobes I have both strobes (a second hand Bowens 400D which came with a stand and a brolly for £99 and a cheapy no name thingy from ebay that was about £50) and a hot shoe flash unit. Given the choice and circumstances I'd use the strobes every time but you'll probably want the speedlight too My portfolio has shots with the strobes and the hot shoe flash (although helpfully ...

I just recieved a wireless flash trigger today. Immediately tried it on my 580EX II. When I attach the PT-04 (reciever) to the flash, it kept triggering it every few seconds. A quick google search confirmed that this kind of wireless trigger is not compatible with 580EX and some 430EX. I think I'm going to send it back to the seller.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions and links. I'll do a bit more digging. By the way, does anyone have a link to a Cobra website that currently works? I can't find one that carries any info about flashguns or has a viable Contact Us facility. Regards, Milo:)

Why on earth anyone spends so much money on diffusers is beyond me, didnt anyone ever watch Blue Peter. Get a small box, line the back with a piece of tin foil to act as reflector if you need one and either cut off the face or the top depending on how you want the light to behave, you could even cause a vignetting effect with a patterned hol and cover with a suitable thin paper, tracing paper ...

The Nikon SB-900 and SB-800 use a red grid pattern that is visiable to the eye... so not infa red, but the Nikon D80 and D300s camera uses a small white led to iluminate the subject and get focus etc.... which i turn off, as i dont like them,,,, and with the lens hood attached, the light doesnt make it past it anyway. :)
