If it's an urgent situation as you seem to suggest you could try hiring kit.... Don't write off ebay, it's only about a week out of your life to buy and have it sent, I use two canon 550 speedlites bought of ebay for £130 each 2 years ago and still used on every shoot, fired with an ST-E2 which I did buy new at the time for £115.....all three well under your £500 budget.

I use a set with a 50 1.8 ( not a dedicated macro lens ). Outdoors in good light they are fine to use handheld, indoors I generally use an old macro flash as you can get pretty close to your subject and cast shadows over it. The flash also means that very close shots indoors ( and out ) can still be done handheld. Saves having to setup tripods and all that business. There are a few shots in my ...

Heaven forbid the owners sell them on ebay for decent money and you miss out at the charity shop Paul Not at all, dealers walk into charity shop and strip the shelves, they don`t want or need the stuff, its simply sold on for profit and people here wonder why they can`t find bargains.

Well, what a coincidence with this thread, mine arrived this evening and it's just a tiny wee one, just a single stem. So tomorrow afternoon I might get the camera out.

The Nikon SB-900 and SB-800 use a red grid pattern that is visiable to the eye... so not infa red, but the Nikon D80 and D300s camera uses a small white led to iluminate the subject and get focus etc.... which i turn off, as i dont like them,,,, and with the lens hood attached, the light doesnt make it past it anyway. :)

@ BigRick On advanced wireless programme yes, I get full commander mode and can cancel my built-in flash but use it as a trigger. On SU-4 the lowest setting is 1/128 on manual and on TTL (which I now realise is wrong) adjustment is a + or - setting which I set at minimum. I've been working alone and with assumptions with this setup for years and this is the first time I've put out a problem ...
