Why I have to leave Olympus
USE FILM again !! My boy was GIVEN an Olympus OM2n with 50mm f1.8 and 70-150mm Zuiko lenses and gets very good results -- no 'SOFTWARE' problems at all -- I develop his B&W and most of his C41 or take it to a High Street Pharmacy which has an account with SIGFOTO laboratory who do an excellent job of processing and printing C41.

Better Cameras DO Take Better Photographs
So far as I recall, Cartier-Bresson trained as a painter, and then tried photography. Using the usual and somewhat clumsy cameras of the time, his work was not particularly good. Then the Leica range became available, and was just what he needed for the instant drawing he wanted to do. At the time it would have been the latest thing in technology, very expensive, with new models, lenses, and a...

D-lighting pros and cons?
Thanks for the info everybody. That makes it a lot clearer. In case you're curious, I do shoot mostly in RAW and do my processing in Lightroom, but sometimes I use RAW+JPG mode as well, especially if I'm shooting in monochrome as sometimes the camera will set things in a way that I like and can find hard to recreate manually in Lightroom!

Syncing 20D and 30D parameters
Yes you'll have to load the raw files into DPP and see. I know that DPP "grays out" settings that aren't available with certain raw-camera combinations. Try to upgrade to the latest version, free from Canon's websites http://www.canon-europe.com/support/software/dpp/

Thanks for all of that info'. It was really good of you to go into such detail. I hate it when things like this happen. I think I understand, then I misunderstand one little thing that makes be think I have misunderstood everything. Your post has clarified matters, however, and so I think I am back on track again. Matt, One way of finding images that have been "lost" is to use the filter to search for them. This feature of LR is very extensive & powerful and herewith a couple of examples..... you will have to select the whole catalogue for this to work.... for me this is about 5,000 images. You can filter on loads of things, exif, metadata, treatment, keywords, star rating etc. etc. ...

Storing photo's
I store all my unprocessed images in folders on a separate hard drive, I find the easiest way at the moment is to name the folders as eg. Spring 2012 etc. then if you remember when an image was taken it is easy to find, I also have folders for specific things like flowers or home town etc. Any prosessed images stay on the main hard drive as well as the external one and every now and again I co...

Time for a new PC or an upgrade?
CathyT doesn't seem to be a SD card that you can use for files...Lets say Excel files....only seems to be for photos and the like. a card reader should work with all files; but may only see images to "import" (like a new win OS) go to Finder Preferences and make sure under General and Sidebar that you have External disks checked to show up on the desktop and sidebar. you will see all files....

A dongle used to be the term for a piece of hardware, typically with a parallel port plug on it My brother used to run a electronic circuit board etching machine via a CAD program casting about £3,000 that could only be used with a dongle in place. It used to drive my brother mad because in order to run other programs he had to remove the dongle. Eventually another company came out with a si...

Editing Photos - do you actually "enjoy" it?
Well, I am not sure what your understanding of editing is. Deciding what to keep and what to trash. This seems to be a very limited view of what editing is.. By common consent, editing is defined as selecting and preparing media. So although deciding what to keep or what to bin is one stage of editing, it also includes adjusting images to suit your purpose.
