Book Reviews
If this book was sat on a shelf in a book shop it'd be its bright cover and spine that would catch your eye. Once the book's in your hands, you'll be even more impressed when you open the cover to find that it's actually a sort of storage unit for four smaller books, each of which focus on one season, that will easily fit in your bag and are easy to hold. Each of the smaller books cover techniques that are specific to the season it's talking about, mentioning equipment you need and shooting advi...
Land Matters – Landscape Photography, Culture and Identity is the latest book form Liz Wells. It is quite an academic text, but is still a rewarding read. It looks at issues raised from landscape photography over time. It also takes iconic landscape images, and analyses them. Every image is taken for a reason, and this book looks in to the cultural and social world that we live in to determine just why these photos were taken. The book explains how the landscape images that we take are i...
With the focus on landscape photography, Heilman talks in detail about practical techniques and gives you hints and tips. If landscape photography appeals to you or you want to further your knowledge in this paticular topic, then this book seems to be the ideal thing. This book would be fitting for both an ameteur of basic photography understanding, or someone with further knowledge, as it uses a number of techinical terms and offers you ideas towards what equipment you should be using, with dia...
'The Landscape Photography Workshop' has content faithful to its title. Ross Hoddinott and Mark Bauer seperate their information into chapters such as Equpiment, creative assignments and printing. They include example pictures and equipment pictures that are spoken about in detail. The content is relatively understandable but I would suggest that those familiar with the basics and maybe more voluntary knowledge of photography, should buy this book. Obviously to those also who are paticularly int...
'Advanced Digital Landscape Photography' offers detailed information about equipment and techniques, creating your own vision, locations and lighting and post-processing. Heilman gives you his opinion of what camera is best suited to what you're trying to achieve, this book is seemingly best for those who know more about, or who are interested in, the technicalities involved in photography and who want to know more details about the camera's functions and what you can get from them. The lang...

I am covering the jubilee events at a village from Thursday next week through to Monday - I have spent time with the organisers so they know I am going to be there and why. I haven't had any problems ever when taking pictures at this type of event even where kids are involved. I admit that I normally have a t-shirt or jacket with the magazine's logo on and photographer written on it, this c...

Re finance I doubt any camera shop deals will be good so go to a bank or even better just save up or buy what you can afford. Unless it is for business use where you can offset costs v,s earnings the message from the current situation is avoid credit. If you cannot afford to buya D70000 with cash can you afford it?

You can always add a soft focus filter for those who want it! ;) (Does anyone still use them?) Or a tiny bit of gaussian blur. What you can't do is add detail which isn't there..............

Better Cameras DO Take Better Photographs
So far as I recall, Cartier-Bresson trained as a painter, and then tried photography. Using the usual and somewhat clumsy cameras of the time, his work was not particularly good. Then the Leica range became available, and was just what he needed for the instant drawing he wanted to do. At the time it would have been the latest thing in technology, very expensive, with new models, lenses, and a...

No idea - I didn't get a normal one to compare against ;-) From the photographs I have seen comparing them it does offer slightly greater sharpness and detail. Given you can't recover such things once lost by an AA filter, and given that many people would pay the same amount extra between the D800/D800E on a lens for as much better or less, I kind of think it is worth it. The other way o...

Camera + bike =.......?
The bigger the bag the more you'll carry. My solution is to pack a small good quality digital and leave the rest in the backup vehicle if you have one. That way you can stop hail the van, get the gear out, snap away and pack away before the next stage, whilst being able to take amazing photos whilst pedalling along the route too.

Thanks for all of that info'. It was really good of you to go into such detail. I hate it when things like this happen. I think I understand, then I misunderstand one little thing that makes be think I have misunderstood everything. Your post has clarified matters, however, and so I think I am back on track again. Thanks Ewan. I did a WW1 tour through Flanders, Amiens, the Somme, etc last year. It was very evocative. I would like to go back to the Somme for the landscape today with it's rolling fields, but also visit some of the graves, etc again. Some of the places you have recommended in your earlier post do look amazing. So it would be nice to see these for something different as well.

Motorsport photography
The Jim Clark is good but can be hard work. As it is on public roads, that are closed for the event, getting to spectator spots can be difficult. Also high hedges get in the way. To start with I suggest you obtain the official programme (about £5) and go to the designated spots. I live 20 minutes drive away and have been for the past four years. In the 1980s I covered the home interntaion...

The change was brought in a while ago that made the ability to a accept modifications mandatory on all critique gallery uploads (E2 or not). There will be a poll up soon and we can pose the question then. Not sure if I get your drift about the regular gallery, but for each pic you have to actively opt in for modifications..

What Lenses for Wedding Photography?
Last wedding I shot entirely on 24-120mm VR, apart from pictures of the speeches, where I used a 50mm f/1.4. I don't think I shot anything longer than 70-80mm. A perfect combo for the day, so I second a 24-120 Nikkor. Nick
