Large Format DIY
To any would be DIY camera builders out there.I happened to see in a August copy of AP someone was advertising the fact they could make camera parts. They are precision engineers and can turn your drawings into reality- their words. They say they can do prototypes or small batch production. Just the thing I thought for those of you struggling to make focusing knobs or other bits and pieces for ...

Large format - which one ??
It is strange how the weight of a camera hung on a neckstrap is seemingly increased by a factor of about 10 once all the film is exposed! Unexposed film must have some gravity repelling force. I have found the same phenomenon with empty and full flash cards in the camera. (Not the same camera, I hasten to add!!!!! ;) ) Anybody else noticed this? :)

Hurray for me! large format fun & questions
One of my uni colleagues etched their own grid onto the ground glass - all you need's a very sharp craft knife, minimum pressure, a steel ruler and a steady hand. Good luck - I've used a Toyo field camera a fair bit and it's an absolute joy.

..,.and then come up with reasons to dump half of the pixels you paid for? Every upload here dumps quite a few, Keith! :D

iq and sensor size
Even then in 35mm terms at equivalent AoVs you're looking at DoF limitation something going on for two stops slower For the 35mm sensor or the 35mm motion picture size sensor, remember these 35mm lenses are really matched to the latter :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=K0shWr-oon4

What do people have against EVF...?
For me it is a case of apples and oranges, EVF can be useful. I have Canon slrs and as a walk about an Olympus EPL1 with a VF3 EVF. ( By the way the standard lens on the EPL1 which feels really flimsy delivers outrageously sharp images for a camera and lens kit that cost me £249!- see Innerleithen Chimneys on my portfolio) Without the EVF the EPL1 is half the camera, with it , you ha...

I have already bought these but I haven't really been able to try them out yet, I twisted a nerve in my leg and I haven't felt like doing anything but now that I am on the mend I am going to really start on my search again. I think that the camera I bought the Nikon D5000 which had a katz-eye installed will be a help too. Harriet

Death of the DSLR
But, there's always the window to look through as a re-assuring backup. As a passenger I wouldn't like the idea of 'no window backup'. But we are losing 'focus' again and the post is becoming 'coloured' again !! Then, maybe that's reasons to have an OVF ?

Just to "second" that motion. I have also been using Ektar 100 in my RB67 with results that please me very much. But what I really like - and this gets back to the original question - is that shooting landscapes in film makes me slow down, appraise the scene, consider all the options, and then take a few exposures. Rather than belting out 20 exposures on my dSLR. I used to take my dig...

Exactly CB so what better way to try out some noise reduction silicon design and software ideas. Indeed. It has been over 3 years since Canon announced their 50Mp effort - also on a 1.3 crop sensor. No sign of them rushing to put this in a production DSLR. I suspect there are still significant issues to be overcome.

Black and white photography with Mamiya RB67
Thank you everyone for all the advice. I more confident now about moving from digital to film capture. I have heeded the points about scanning (don't skimp here!) and using mirror lock up too. Thanks again.

Quote:... But absolutely nothing in photography beats the thrill of seeing a good LF tranny on the lightbox for the first time. Except perhaps seeing it projected on screen with a good projector. jas

Satin Snow, as far as I know, is taking a break from accepting orders - He has too many and is trying to catch up. I hear Satin Snow is very good (and it only costs about 10 or 15 USD), but have never used one - it's a little different animal than the Maxwell, as I think it's rep comes from the fact that it is a very, very finely ground glass, as the Maxwell is something of a "super fresnel" la...

Manual SLR revival?
Get a hold of a EOS 1V HS (I have two of them). It is so sweet to use, the shutter sound is a dream, the exposure is just so good, it just feels so right in the hands. It still beats my EOS 40D (with grip) hands down, I hope I can continue to enjoy slide film for a long time to come.
