That still doesn't explain how you define and measure '50% resolution' The same way as "everybody else" who wants to do it ;) Fuji did it (and still do) for their films, comparing resolving power in lp lines/mm with a 1000:1 target and a 1.6:1 target. You can achieve something similar by 1/ scanning a 1000:1 target and printing out a copy having significantly reduced the target contrast so...

how to photograph a street carnival
Ah right - having had a quick look at the website gallery you won't be short of people to photograph at least! Unfortunately I can't really help on the technicalities - we don't get any night-time carnivals in my neck of the woods!

do i use slow shutter speeds? It depends upon what you are photographing. The faster the object is moving the shorter the exposure you need to achieve decent light trails. It also depends how long you want the trails to be. You have 2 options, you can either start with something like 1/2 a second and work from there by trial and error, or you could use the scientific method of calculati...

Photographing the stars on a NikonD40
It's got more to do with the lens you use than the particular camera body. Ideally, of course, you want the filter in front of the sensor changed to allow light of around the 700MHz frequency through - but that then makes the camera less useful for general photography. (If you are really interested in the technicalities, it's got something to do with the alternative electron states within hydro...

Is low light a genre or a challange?
In a country where we have a lot of rain, a lot of snow and a lot of cloud days...from the perspective of an outdoor photographer (me) low light days are a reality but not a challenge. Sure, the mood of the pictures aren't the same as the mood of the pictures people take in the sunnier parts of the world but we work with what we have. Some studio photographers turn out great shots that are my...

Aperture linked to ISO

Astro Photography
I got into photography through an interest in astronomy and have been doing astrophotography for 20 years. It's possible to get good pictures with fairly simple gear, your Canon should be very well suited to it. Manual exposures are what you'll be needing almost all the time, as cameras find it difficult to meter such things as the Moon. A full Moon can often be captured well with an exposure o...
