If you are really concerned about power spikes, you could purchase a surge protection unit. They are cheap and very useful for your home electronics as well.

Portable lighting set-up PLEASE HELP!
If it's an urgent situation as you seem to suggest you could try hiring kit.... Don't write off ebay, it's only about a week out of your life to buy and have it sent, I use two canon 550 speedlites bought of ebay for £130 each 2 years ago and still used on every shoot, fired with an ST-E2 which I did buy new at the time for £115.....all three well under your £500 budget.

Portable Studio advice please ...
The joy of high-key lighting is that you can set it up and forget about it and concentrate on getting the best out of your subjects. If you know the basics and can vary the lighting then you have more options for your clients and it can set you apart from the competition. High Key is great for the younger generation, but alot of teens/adults seem to prefer the mean and moody low key stuff. ...

Thanks folks, I am not a cheap-skate, but beng a pensioner I suppose I have at least to 'show willing', to the other half, when it comes to spending on my hobby! So that was the reason for the enquiry about the builders' set-up; prudent rather than frugal! Of course, I want to make images and not build walls, so I think I'll go for the 'proper-job'. Thanks again fellers and I'll make som...

Portable Lighting?
Hi Pixy - you might want a couple of flashguns - I have a couple of cheap Mirandas from ebay at less than £20 each plus a cheapie radio trigger and 2 receivers also from ebay for around £15 - £20. Email Lee Filters for their sample gels (free) and you can tape them to your flash to vary the colours/to compensate for available light. As this only leaves you with around £10, you could get two mat...

I have the Lastolite Lumen8 400w, three head kit and am very happy with it. Someone will, no doubt, recommend a kit from Elemental too, though I have no experience. The owner is a member of EPZ - many members have bought from him and highly recommend the kit and the service.

Ahhh this is one thing about the EPZ forums, the Resurrection of threads from the last decade all down to the way the forum brings back search results. I've done it myself, answered a question only to discover the thread was 6 years old.
