I'm undecided about this book - part of me says it should have more technical information - there's a lack of what equipment was used and captions for pics are short. While the other half says you don't need technicalities...the pictures in this book do the job of providing inspiration and giving you fresh ideas for close ups. The approach is quite radical...close ups with distant subjects also in frame to put the close up subject into perspective...some work really well others are disappointi...
One macro book I reviewed recently lacked technical details this one makes up for it and arguably every other book on close ups. Basically it's the best I've come across. Packed with fantastic photos of all types of macro subjects you can be inspired, but, better still, the equipment you need and how to do it is thoroughly covered with everything from tubes to microscope attachments, exposure details in film and digital areas. If you don't understand macro after reading this book, it's time to t...
Many books have been written on the subject of close up photography, some intend to show of the authors in-depth knowledge which, in turn, make the subject look like a science/algebra lesson rather than fun, others skim the surface in a superficial way. This book rocks the boat and delivers, in the reviewer's opinion, the best, most practical book ever written on close up photography. The square format gives space for pictures to breathe, the design is simple, type style easy to absorb, and the...
Robert Thompson is an accomplished wildlife photographer, author and entomologist whose photographs have appeared in many books and magazines throughout Britain and Europe. Close-up and Macro: A Photographer's Guide is split into three parts. Part one covers what hardware you'll need including choosing a camera system to accessories such as tripods, lenses and extension tubes. Part two focuses on putting it all into practice, covering backgrounds, finding subjects and how to photograph flowers a...
When it comes to macro and close-up photography, this book doesn't miss a trick! Everything from the equipment you need to technique advice is covered. The book's informative without getting so complex it gets boring and the large, colourful shots used throughout the book really make it easy to understand what the author's telling you. The lessons are further enhanced with the comparison diagrams which can be found with most of the tutorials and the tips the author gives on what equipment you ne...

Manufacturer's description: "Medium telephoto lens with a macro feature for 1x magnification. Fluctuations in spherical aberrations caused by focusing are suppressed, and high-quality images are obtained at all focusing distances. With eight aperture blades, good background blur is obtained even when the aperture is decreased by one or two stops. A focusing limiter which limits the magnification to 0.25x is built-in."

I have the Sigma 150mm macro and the only reason I use a filter is because sometimes I remove the lens hood when using a blip of flash on camera, so it protects the front element from the sometimes dry grasses/stones/twigs etc when crawling around in the undergrowth.
F/2.5 .... I did forget, that was the lens but as you say long before AF.
I purchased the Olympus Zuiko 60mm macro shortly after they became available here in Sydney. I have since used it on my OMD 5 and am very satisfied with the results. Very nicely sharp even using auto focus.
Good move :) Sadly mine is unusable so I'm making do with a cheap little Sony macro until funds become available for a new one!

Thanks for the comments. As I mentioned, I'm a complete novice to close up photography but I'm learning fast :D Ignorance of the minimal focusing distance of the lens is what seems to have been causing me most of my initial problems along with relying on using auto-focusing rather than manual focusing. I've done some reading up since my initial post - when push comes to shove check out the m...

My subject was Pepper, our all-black kitten, who would not keep still or look into the camera. Tried the same with the dog who thought it was fun to lick an then try and bite the lens :( Well, my subject didn't try that, but took some persuading to pose all the same :) Well done Alison - you're going to be busy :)
