What is a good DSLR to start with?
I would check what is recommended for your course. It is probably best you hold off on purchasing till you need to. See what kit they have and what you can borrow. I know someone doing a photography degree now who is not using a digital camera.

What the Dickens....!?!
Putting hurtful accusations of sarcasm to one side ........the writing's been on the wall ever since our political masters decided that education was the answer to many of our economic woes. Continually tinkering with the system and the placing of 'bums on seats' in an effort to reduce youth unemployment was bound to have a detrimental effect on standards, both in terms of making the getting of...

The road to Tehran.
Whats the fuss about? Günter Grass: What Must Be Said But why have I kept silent till now? Because I thought my own origins, Tarnished by a stain that can never be removed, meant I could not expect Israel, a land to which I am, and always will be, attached, to accept this open declaration of the truth. Why only now, grown old, and with what ink remains, do I say: Israel's atomic...

I am going to take my chances and continue interacting with kids the way that adults did with me when I was a kid.Good for you - I admire your courage and refusal to kow tow to the idiocy of our politically correct obsessesed society.

National Service
I enjoyed "War hero in my family " last night, Chris Tarrant and his crocodile tears. Also the other "hero" he was a rigger in the RAF, Most probably never heard a shot fired in anger. I remember when I voluntered for the RAF. Opting for a useful job as an engine fitter. The flightless wonder who interviewed me seemed aghast. He said "Surely you owe it to your country to volunteer for aircrew"...

Six Stages of a Photograhers Journey
The list does not fit me very well. 1. first interest was in the science and technology of SLR photography. As a scientist I was well on top of the technical aspects very quickly even before I had owned an SLR and pressed a shutter. 2. I then discovered that I knew nothing about composition, tonal ranges or even what I wanted to photograph 3. Joined a Club and through club competitions rap...

What makes a good photo?
Whatever it is that makes a good photo I'm hoping that one day I will be able to take one. Never be satisfied with what you do - always strive to do something better.

Capitalism
That article is about corporate greed and I guess the decline started when GS went public. The 'capitalism' part is about regulation of the market which the current capitalist model chooses to ignore, but hopefully the powers that be will remedy that in good time. It will still be captialst but in a different way.

It simply is not.....
In "Gulliver's Travels", the government leaders in Lilliput were chosen for their ability on the tight-rope. The book is worth reading again, as an adult. Jonathan Swift wrote the book as a satirical commentry of the political system of his day. Had he not described it as a fairy story for children, its content would have consigned him to the gallows.Yes; it has to be admitted that things ...

Canon EOS-1D X released
This is the samples page on the Canon Japan website, given the way this has been populated in the past I wouldn't hold out hopes for a RAW image at high ISO anytime soon though. Am I missing something with this? I can only see 600x400 pixel images. The highest ISO one being 12,800 - which looks very clean. But how could you tell at that size?
