Mirrorless is clearly significant new competition - but there is no sign yet of Nikon going into decline Well Nikon are right in there with their 1-series mirrorless which has sold better than expected, I gather, despite its sensor which is smaller than 4/3. It is only Canon who are refusing to enter the competition......... so far. Only a matter of time though! ;)

Sony A55, what are the existing problems?
I guess it could be a hardware failure, but first I would do the full reset. So take out all the batteries (it may have a small watch type one). Leave them out for at least 10 min. Then put them back in, run the factory reset item then re-configure. If it is still missing then contact your dealer as it should still be under warranty. Oh and check you have the self timer off as it may decid...

£150 DSLR?
There`s not a lot of second hand Olympus about, you might strike lucky. There was recently a second hand near mint E410 going for about £80 body only in a shop, some one got a bargain there.

Buying my first DSLR help
an electronic viewfinder would be horribleHorrible is a bit strong. They're not fantastic, but they are surprisingly usable. On a compact its more useful than the poor quality optical finders that some of them have, and a lot more useful than not having a finder. And a lot better than a fixed LCD on the back. (A movable LCD is another matter) it will never match an optical view finder. They'...

Suggestion changing my camera
I reckon the OP is best advised to get a DSLR - for the reasons spelt out earlier in the thread. Any of the compromises are going to lead to disappointment. Any reasonable secondhand DSLR will outperform all these small sensor cameras and you can get them relatively cheaply. I'd go for a Sony A100 plus kit lens - that'll be well under the £280 budget, so there'll be room to buy a s/h zoom too. ...

Affordable Long Lens?
Sorry I fibbed! I've got the earlier 170 - 500 version but I believe they are very similar, but the 150 is said to be even sharper. Sorry for the confusion!!:) Barbara

Should I change DSLRs
Quote:My a700 Busted the gears in my Sigma 70-300 Twice (so had to buy a Tamron instead) & messed it up again the other week. It also Messed up my Sigma 170-500 twice and it's now back with sigma with Soft focusing at the 500mm end.Is this an A700/Sigma incompatibility issue or just something that only your camera does? I had a similar problem with my Sigma 50-500mm and my old KM5D, I made a...

Group test
Quote:Thanks Matt, now can you get your hands on the A850 for a test? From what I have read elswehere the test would be the same as the A900, which Matt has already done. The only differences are: the 3 instead of 5 frames per second and 98% instead of 100% viewfinder Oh, and of course, the price ! True, but I hope the high ISO noise performance has improved.

Question: Sony Vs Canon
When we had film cameras (remember them?) there was no live view, Not exactly I suppose, but TLR and rangefinder do have live view in the sense of seeing what is happening all the time with no mirror to blank out the view. Canon even made an SLR with no swinging mirror - a pellicle mirror ? - which was popular for portraiture. However I don't think the current electronic live view on SLR i...
