Sony SLT A77
If you try the A77 make sure it has the latest firmware (1.05). This has a lot of improvements - in particular it makes the camera operations much faster.

I have the 50 1.8 it's a great lens. I though I'd lost it recently cos my camera bag felt empty it's that light. Let me know if you want an experimental image, say a subject at closest focus distance with a given background item to show amount of blur

Critique Gallery
That is and always has been the ethos of the site. However, it's hard enought to "police" the quality of critique in the Critique Gallery, and would be an impossible task in the main gallery. It's really up to individual members to make that effort. One problem often referred to in that regard is people being put off giving honest critique because of the fear of a bad response from the poster ...

Micro 4/3 for professional use
Thanks Pete. I never use JPEG, if RAW is available. But it looks like the RAW images are also corrected in-camera. That said, I used my Pen with old manual Canon FD lenses and never found any issues. So correction can't be overly drastic. But it leads, I guess, to a whole new discussion! What matters more - the end result, or how you get there? ;)

Even though our studio is upstairs I don't think that puts people off. Our gallery and studio are in an old building with the original stained floor boards with a grand staircase going up to the studio which most people love, and no one has ever mentioned it being a problem. The clients that do have a photo shoot all comment on how nice the studio is, they get on great with our photographer, an...

105 vs 150 for macro?
I have the Sigma 150 OS for a Nikon, really love the lens but it is a heavy lens - the focusing is internal so no need to worry about the front of the lens coming out and scaring off what you are trying to focus on ;-)

Backdrops and stands
So, you recommend spending £90 plus, as opposed to just starting out with a simple sheet (couple of quid from supermarket) some big clips to secure it (couple of quid from supermarket)? Do it cheaply first, then identify whether you need to spend money on more apprpriate gear.

wildlife photography (in snow!)
Thanks. It's not easy with a caper, basically black against white. Your image has good detail in the bird and so I don't believe that the exposure was wildly off from the optimum in the conditions. Your background will not be helping the situation because of the light coming through the trees to the left. Try to get a little lower so the bird is against the trees and there will be less ...

Taking portraits at home
Thanks :) No I didn't, the room is entirely white, including the floor so maybe that helped, but I just stood her in front of the window but at the back of the room so the light was softer and that was it.

That is because they have struck a balance between resolution, speed (in terms of frame rate) and low noise at high ISO. It all depends where your requirements lie.

Quad Core v i5 Processor?
You might need a dedicated graphics card if you want to add HDMI, but I'm not sure why you're dead set on the machine you've been looking at? At £400 you can buy a desktop with 2nd generation Core i3 processor, decent amount of RAM, probably a DVI connection. I'd be surprised if such a PC wasn't a drastic improvement over what you've got even if it isn't quite as nippy as a Core i5 or i7. Y...
