Book Reviews
If you want to be inspired, wowed and want to pick up a few essential photography tips along the way, you need to take a look at this book. You are taken on an exciting journey around the world in 191 pages where the varied collection of imagery and stories that flow through the book really do bring the experience to life. You share David's thoughts before, during and after his shoots and within this diary like approach, you also find tips and shooting advice you can use while out in the ...
You may think the cover portrait is a tad dull and uninspiring (the repro of this image has more contrast on the inside version), but open this 128 page book and you'll find far better examples inside. The author, David Wilson, aims to introduce amateurs and semi-professionals to the varied world of portraiture. It covers techniques to improve composition, rapport, exposure, lighting and much more. the book includes extended captions of around 200 words per picture that are tips and technique...
One of the latest in the location series looks at the world of portraiture. The book is laid out in the innovative Rotovision style ie minimal text, lots of high quality photographs and very detailed captions. The beauty with this is you can find a photograph quickly and then learn technique from the caption, saving you having to trawl through reams of copy finding the bit you are interested in. So it goes without saying this book needs to have good captions, and here the author has done a gre...
Almost 150 years of nude photographs in chronological order starting out with a fuzzy, badly processed image titled Musette by Nadar dating back to 1855. The choice of pictures in this 136 page book is very subjective and some would never have left the darkroom tray had I been taken them, let alone reaching this book decades later. Having said that there are some classics including well known images from the likes of Man Ray,Jeanloup Sieff and Bill Brandt and what makes this book worth viewing i...
Here is a fantastic collection of portrait pictures with a huge variety of styles, even though the names of many of the contributors are unknown. If this book doesnt fill you with inspiration to help you improve your portrait pics then I dont know what will. As with other books in the Lighting series each photograph is supported by a short, but useful, caption and an illustration of the lighting set up. Many are simple single light sets so you could go off and copy the styles yourself with littl...

blaQk Sheep The Wedding Photography Inspiration Guide
Programmer, Michael Alan Bielat is also a professional wedding and portrait photographer in Buffalo, NY. He came up with an idea for an wedding photo inspiration guide while searching Apple's App Store. There, he found a dozen or so wedding photography posing apps but they were either busted or contained cheesy images that were seriously out of sync with the latest wedding styles and trends. It was then that Michel decided to put his programming skills to work and The Wedding Photography Inspiration Guide was born!

(2) This does not mean the critique has to be lengthy. A few words accompanied by a modification can be equally helpful, but only if the modifier has explained the "why" and "how"..
(3) It should stand out from other critiques, e.g. merely complimentary ones and ones containing only minor suggestions
(4) It should explore composition, lighting, style and execution - as appropriate. Subject matter comes after these aspects.
(5) Critique does not necessarily mean critical. You can draw attention to good aspects of the photo in such a way as to help anyone reading to improve their own work. This will always mean going well beyond merely pointing out these aspects and admiring them. (This will often be a much more difficult task than suggesting how to improve the photo.)
Each photographer you make into a favourite appears on your favourite photographers page (accessed from your profile) They're listed in a grid with the thumbnail of the latest picture they've uploaded.
Underneath the photo is the date and time it was uploaded and the user name of the photographer. Below that is a tick box and, if set, a message icon
Click on the photo and you are taken straight to that photographer's image.
Click on the name and you go to their portfolio.
There's a drop down list at the top of the page
Here you select one of the following actions:
- Remove Selected
- Set Notifications for Selected
- Remove Notifications for Selected
- Set All Notifications
- Remove All Notifications
If you tick a box under a photographer (or several boxes under several photographers) and then choose one of the options with "Selected" in the title it will do whatever that option says just to those photographers that are ticked.
The "All" options make the setting to every photographer on your list.
So, for example, if you want to receive notifications when three photographers upload you would tick each of those and select "Set Notifications for Selected" And click on "Go" You will then see the envelop icon appear next to the tick box of those three photographers.
If you then decide that you want to stop receiving notifications from one of those three you would click on the tick box and select "Remove Notifications for Selected". You would then have just two photographers who's notifications are received.
Receiving email notifications is a great way to keep track of your favourites.
It's a daily guide to help readers take better photos of the chosen subject. The forum then provides a place to show examples of this subject. You can go out and take the shot specifically (which is encouraged to help those who want to develop) or you can show off previous examples. Use it how you like.
We create a news announcement and then contact the overall winner via PM.

What I just read didn't come as a shock. Actually, it's more or less what I figured the big picture looked like...a nice A1 sized print!
