What will Canon do about the D800?
Pixel binning will allow the user to have the benefits of very high resolution or very low noise depending on their requirements. I think this may be the basis on which the 41Mp Nokia sensor for camera phones will be operating. As there is no optical zoom, resolution will be reduced when you use the digital zoom, thereby keeping the noise level the same and you will still get a decent photo...

How Big Is Big?
OK. Thank you all so far. The DOF in your photographs KevSB is wonderful (interestingly, I guess the soldiers move quickly so the 5D focus is coping well despite what some say), and ian your pictures are quite stunning, making me want to go 5D. But, because I can't invest in the additional expense of buying new macro and telephoto lenses then leaning towards the 7D, leaving me money to buy a ...

d3s or d3x - need advice.
Maintenance of apparent image scale during focus pulling is dear to the heart of every cinemaphotographer and is one reason why movie lenses are so much more expensive than stills lenses. The lack of breathing is one thing that makes the Zeiss 100mm macro lens so convenient for close-up work. As I said, it is also the reason Nikon introduced the Mk 11. Getting technical the Mk 1 breathes a...

DSLR damp squibs?
The 1Dx is really an update on the 1D4 It's a replacement for the 1D4 and the 1Ds3. The lines have been merged. But it leaves the highest res canon as the 5D3 which is way behind the Nikon D800 in resolution.

Nikon D700 or D7000
24-120 looks good but I'm sure you can't fit a filter to protect the lens. There are 3 versions of the 24-120 - all accept front filters. The current f4 version is optically the best and takes 77mm filters. As 77mm good quality filters are fairly expensive, insurance for any damage and theft is usually much cheaper, and the f4 hood gives good front end protection getting a front filter for ...

Technical Guide for D800/D800E
You might find that the size of the Raw files is not, in itself, such a problem. It really depends what you are asking your computer to do with them. When I was shooting MF film on the RB67 and scanning the 6x7 colour negatives at 2400ppi I was getting Tiff files of around 700Mb (ten times the size of a D800 Raw) and Lightroom had no problem processing those on the computer I was using at th...

I have one of these, or at least very similar. As soon as the weather warms up a tad, then I am never without it:) Even during really hot days, it is quite comfortable to wear over a T-shirt, while out chasing butterflies and the like Enough pockets to ensure everything is kept secure, while crawling about in undergrowth etc;

Why should I upgrade my Nikon D50?
Sorry this late, just found the thread ;) The biggest factors for me would be much less noise at far higher ISO settings. (My current Nikon is virtually noise-free at ISO 6400 and acceptable at twice that) I had, and still have the D50, and wanted to upgrade for the noise issue too. I bought the D5100 last August, and while I have some grasp of the principles behind pixels and sensors, th...
