Book Reviews
If you already work with Elements and you want to further your knowledge then this is a really good guide to have. The book has several projects where the author explains how they are achieved in detail so you can do it yourself. The text is written in a very clear and concise way and the images used are appropriate, large and clear. If you need more than the book offers you can turn your attention to the DVD that accompanies the book. The DVD offers detailed explanations and video tuto...
Elements is a cut down version of Photoshop but no less satisfying to use and although the interface has been designed for beginners theres still plenty that needs good explanation and thats what Philip Andrews intends to do with this 246 page book. Colour throughout the book is heavily illustrated some examples are overkill but many are excellent visual aids to areas of digital imaging that are often talked about but rarely illustrated such as artefacts that occur when an image is saved as a J...
While many image-editing software guides assume you already know all about photography this book includes tips throughout to help you shoot better. One of the opening quotes sums up the author's approach: "No longer will you look at an image simply for what it is. From now on you'll see what it can become". The pictures used to illustrate the various features of Elements are typical family snaps. Mikkel shows us how to make the most of Elements and enhance the family album. It's well written and...
Like the Complete Photoshop book this is a heavy 768 page reference guide, showing that A) it's potentially going to be thorough and b) Elements is actually one heluva program if it needs a book this thick to cover it. To help you wade through the book it's split into five sections each with loads of sub headings. The sections are: Part I: Photoshop Elements Orientation Part II: Managing the Digital Darkroom Workflow Part III: Adding Special Effects to Your Images Part IV: Preparing Your Pho...
Elements is the program bought by newcomers to digital manipulation and the book it comes with is fine for those, but there's also a large group of photographers who can't justify the cost of Photoshop and buy Elements as the low cost alternative. This book will satisfy their needs but also anyone else with a thirst for knowledge. It goes way beyond the normal greeting card, red eye removal, and simple colour correction techniques and has some excellent descriptions of image problems with remedi...

FAQs
Your image MUST be no longer than 600 pixels on the longest side (1000 pixels for e2 members).
The image MUST be in JPEG format - this means it must be saved with .jpg extension
at the end.
The image must be RGB, not CMYK.
Note that if you use Adobe RGB (1998) colour space rather than sRGB it will result in a loss in density and contrast.
Here's the easiest way to do it in Photoshop (PS) (7, CS & Elements):
In your application go to Image - Image size (PS)/ This will bring up a box
showing some dodgy numbers (Screenshot 1 - PS Version as I don't have Elements!)
Screenshot 1
1 = Pixel Dimensions
2 = Resolution
The first thing to do in this box is to change the resolution. Mine at the
moment says "600" pixels/inch (aka ppi/dpi). For viewing on the web,
72 dpi is plenty. DON'T CLICK OK!!!! When you change the resolution, you will
notice that the Pixel Dimensions have changed too. These may have changed to
less than 600 pixels. You can now change the highest number to 600 pixels (on
a landscape for example, this will be the width). The other number will look
after itself (Screenshot 2)
Screenshot 2
Now you can click ok! Your image will get much smaller on the screen.
With the zoom tool selected right click on the image and select "Actual
Size". This will bring the image back to a viewable size.
If you want to apply any sharpening (lots of people do, I don't!) you
should do it now.
Here's the "tricky" bit: Go to "File - Save For Web".
There'll be a new screen popup titled "Save for Web, Powered by Image
Ready" (or similar).
The bit on the right is what you are interested in. Ignore all the boxes
for a moment. Beside Preset theres a circle with a triangle in it. Press
it. This will bring up "Optimize to File Size":
Screenshot 3
Screenshot 4
Where you see "Desired File Size", set that to 100 or below (I normally
use 99 just to be on the safe side), and then hit OK. That will disappear and
bring you back to the Save for web dialogue.
Hit the Save button, choose a place to save and Robert is your father's brother!
If this doesn't help we have a technique here which tells you how to resize your photos in several other applications.

Photoshop elements 8 to 9
I just got a 60D and then had to just download an update to my element 8. Have another look on the adobe site for a free patch. I'd be very surprised/annoyed with Adobe if 8 would not support the 600D.

Photoshop elements - what is it?
If you look at the adverts for ludicrously cheap copies of Photoshop etc they say in the small print that this disc should only be used for a backup copy and that the purchaser should already have a valid licence. This means that the seller is not breaking any laws. Of course most people don't realise about this small print and install as new and then break the licence agreements.

Opening Raw Files in Photoshop Elements 5
Converting to TIFF is an extra stage in the process and you're not getting the real benefits of using RAW, such as the ability to change the white balance and exposure settings etc. I think you misunderstand the power of DPP and how the RAW plug in works with Elements/Photoshop. The Plug in converts the RAW file into a for the photo editor can use, so does DPP. But you will find that DPP has...

Photoshop Elements & Paint Shop Pro
If you have Windows 2000 or XP you do not need any other programme to upload from the camera since Windows Explorer will do it for you treating camera or card reader as an 'external source'. Except for some older cameras such as my Canon s20, a long discontinued model. The trap is that there is no command saying upload etc. Also in W2K the 'Copy to' and 'Move to' commands do not appear in...

Photoshop Elements - Any good?
I started with Elements 2 a few years ago and think it is a good starter software for a pleasant price. It is quite powerful and with the adobe elements forum (a weekly challenge, pleasant banter and helpful members) you should have the basics soon under control. You have outgrown elements when you start yearning for photoshop. Robert

Photoshop Elements 6
As I so seldom use the filters, I had forgotten they mostly only work on 8 bit in Elements. Many of the photo editing tools are fine in 16 bit. I must check in the GIMP, but last time I tried its 16 bit support was just as limited as Elements, later versions may be better. If you add Grants tools you get layer masks, and colour channels and curves on Elements. As far as I can tell Gimp is ...

Ah see now this is where it confuses me because PSE also has the ability to organise, tag, 'star' photos etc. So some of that can be done in PSE too. there is a lot of overlap between the products. IIRC the main difference is that PSE/Bridge is a viewer so will allow you to organize a directory when you browse to it. Ligtroom is a database, so it can remember and manage files that are on...

Colour settings in Photoshop Elements
Not a colour management expert, however: 1. Set camera to use sRGB 2. Set Photoshop to use sRGB 3. Set monitor to use sRGB In my experienece the limited colour space in sRGB is hardly noticeable in general every-day use. Labs will use their own properity colour spaces, but since the vast majority of consumer cameras shoot in sRGB, that is likely to give the least compatibility issues...
