When someone describes a hero as anyone who does what they love without having a back-up plan, you know they must believe-in and be passionate about what they do and Gene Kiegel most certainly does that. Here's his story of how a wanna be inventor turned into a professional and passionate photographer.

Aquarium Photography
Well I am back from the trip, unfortunately couldn`t be at the centre at dusk! Managed to maybe get 2 or 3 shots that were somewhat respectable. That was very very hard in the dark. I have uploaded 1 to my gallery. Brilliant experience at the Oceanografic centre in Valencia. Stu

What do people have against EVF...?
For me it is a case of apples and oranges, EVF can be useful. I have Canon slrs and as a walk about an Olympus EPL1 with a VF3 EVF. ( By the way the standard lens on the EPL1 which feels really flimsy delivers outrageously sharp images for a camera and lens kit that cost me £249!- see Innerleithen Chimneys on my portfolio) Without the EVF the EPL1 is half the camera, with it , you ha...

Fear of overexposure
Its good to learn and understand the fundamentals yup - that's the bottom line, if you suss that out first, use the bits you like, then move on to your own style, bingo... job done :-) that said, I was using 4-5 stops of ND grad in the lakes this week to stop the sky burning ;-) but that's not strictly true actually... I used 4-5 stops because of the conditions, bit over cast, wanted...

Flash gun advice for wedding shoot please!
A few pointers from me re the original questions... Try not to use the wider end of the short zoom apart from large group shots, as the perspective is not so flattering. You don't need to be too rabid about keeping the shutter speed high if you use the flash, as the flash duration is short enough to freeze motion, as long as you don't have it so slow you cause ghosting (ie. keep it above ...

copying black and white prints
I copied some last night, low tack masking tape on the back wall of my conservatory and photographed them with a 90mm macro lens tripod mounted. the initial av setting at f5.6 was a little bright so dialed in -0.7 ev and they came out great, just watch for reflection flare from above, if needed set up a bit of muslin or similar like a light tent to diffuse the overhead glare. How To Compose Photographs!
Hello Denny, I've now woken up to a sunny morning! THanks for your comment - I haven't lost my interest in photography. By the way, I'm still trying to get to grips with my 7D. Between now and Christmas, I shall be looking forward to an operation on my right eye. Then I'll need new glasses - so, no chance of any new photo gear during 2012. Not after buying a new car! :D Frank.

inaccurate for wide angle lens
In the case of my photograph I'd say it's more likely focus than camera shake, since the camera was mounted on a tripod and the middle section of the photograph is sharp. I'll post it up later if I remember.

Inspiration
One technique worth using Seany, if you don't have any light modifiers like umbrellas or softboxes, is to fire your flash through curtain material or similarly translucent, as it will soften the harsh shadows created by direct flash light. @ Ade, good idea - mine was a bargain at 15 quid(without arms or head), and they do go for quite a bit on ebay...

Filters
It depends what you want to achieve. Honestly, I've managed to get some fairly decent results without a polarizer, but I couldn't manage without the grads. For what its worth what I did, and what I would recomend. Get a decent system and but slowly, a 2 or 3 stop ND grad (Hard) first - then build up your system. Why not have a look through the galleries on here and elsewhere - look w...
