@MeanGreeny A very useful link to the Paul Buff site. The reference to Guide Numbers, see below, say so much :) Guide Numbers This is one of the most abused terms in the studio lighting industry. A guide number tells the user nothing about the actual amount of light a certain flash unit can emit. Instead, the Guide Number (GN) term tells you what exposure you can expect on-axis from a g...

Lighting Advice Wanted Please.
Merlin Hobo range available through CotswoldPhoto on eBay. Lotsa bang for your buck with a reputable UK seller. IIRC it's made by the same company in China that makes the Elemental strobes.

Neewer Lighting Kits
I bought a Neewer 900w kit in early September this year through Amazon. It was delivered within 4 days. For the price it is excellent value for money, even including a carry case. It has made a tremendous difference to my photography. It was easy to set up and I had no trouble in getting all the lights to fire with my Nikon camera. If you are a keen amateur like me, want good results and not wa...

Loads of helpful advice from everyone so good luck hope it goes well for you. The best advice I got from a freind who was a very succesful pro sadly now deceased is the best shots come when you have taken the time to get to know your subject and your client. He gave as an example kids, talk to the parents as they may have allready got favourite photos so you see what they like, and play with ...

Portrait Lighting
Firstly where are you going to be using this soft box, your front room ? the large ones need plenty of space. Would a 400w D-Lite be suitable in any size of softbox or is there a size limit for this head The size of the stand will be more important, a 400w head should be able to handle quite large soft boxes, but as Ade say`s we need more information.

Studio type portraits...........Help !!
For cheapness, check out floodlights like these kind of things: http://www.toolbox.co.uk/faithfulll-500-watt-4634-84182 I have seen them for as little as £8 before and they come in different shapes. They don't need to be too high a power rating, and you can make up things to modify the light cheaply as well. Power can be varied by moving the lights nearer or farther from the subject, ...

Portable lighting set-up PLEASE HELP!
If it's an urgent situation as you seem to suggest you could try hiring kit.... Don't write off ebay, it's only about a week out of your life to buy and have it sent, I use two canon 550 speedlites bought of ebay for £130 each 2 years ago and still used on every shoot, fired with an ST-E2 which I did buy new at the time for £115.....all three well under your £500 budget.

Pete thanks for the help, Ive analysed a shoot i did recently and most of my shots were around the 45-50mm range, so potentialy 300 w/s should be well in the frame. Also I've looked at Elemental as they were reviewed recently by Black+White magazine, but, when I got there it seemed they were out of stock of nearly everything. Talk about the Pub with no beer? David thanks to you too, it's rea...

Canon Speedlites as Slave units?
I am using a 80cm brolly on one light and a reflector brolly of the same size on the other. I h e now got a 100cm softbox that I ordered and has finally come. I am positioning the lights in the corners of the setup aiming at the opposing corner to cross light the subjects. With the third light I have now brought I am going to position this to the side of the subjects just behind on a lower flas...
