Help! Macro focusing
Hi, not sure if this will help but I can usually get 1:1 shots with AF, you just have to get in as close as you can so that the camera can focus automatically, this prob won't be 1:1 but you then just have to edge forwards, pressing the shutter button to focus repeatedly until you get it to focus at 1:1. This technique works most of the time but is by no means foolproof, as already mentioned, ...

Manfrotto/Benro/Vanguard
The Velbon Ultra Rexi L is the one I will be buying shortly having had a loan of one for the past week or two. Very compact, light and I found sturdy enough even last weekend up in the lake district where it was very windy at times. I use a ball and socket head with friction control and find this works well for me. I am 6ft 3 and the height of the Velbon was no problem at all. Like you I ca...

Trip to Iceland with my Nikon D90
I understand how frustrating the gift shops were (I hate them) but at Gulfoss and Geysir, the attractions were yards away. We ended up about 20 minutes walk from the Gulfoss visitor centre, wading through knee deep snow to get some shots of the Icelandic ponies (who were also avoiding the gift shops). At Geysir, I had a quick hot chocolate before spending the rest of the hour or so watching and...

Which Tripod for Nikon d90?
Welcome Seoulsaver - thankyou for sharing your thoughts. I have now made my decision and have my new tripod. Weight was the most important thing for me as I am a little lady who already has a huge bag to carry..lol I have chosen the Giooto travel with the series one ball head, it has arrived, I have had a good play with it and I am delighted, lightweight 1kg, and yet sturdy enough. A tripod tha...

Tripods - 3 section legs or 4 section legs
The two advantages I find for the Manfrotto are to do with macro - usnig the the centre column in horizontal mode is great for getting closer to flowers etc and I find the locking levers easier to use than twist lock for making small height adjustments at low level. For landscapes the Velbon is the one of choice.

zoom lens factors for kit lens upgrade
Tripods and heads is one subject that people get very worked up about - I think because (like camera bags) size, weight and adjustability are all personal preferences. For example, how tall are you (will you spend loads of time bending over to check the composition?)? Weight - will you be hiking with it or walking short distances from car to viewpoint? Do you prefer twist locks on the tripod le...
