Photos Not Just For People

I've gone through life thinking that only people used photographs. We use them for so many purposes, but I never even considered the possibility that anyone or anything else but humans would have any use for photos at all.

But today I read on a Dutch news site that some animals, in this case gorillas, can benefit from the use of portrait photos of other gorillas. Two zoos, an English and a French zoo, have exchanged portrait photos of gorillas with the intention of preparing the gorilla la...

... of our own device!"

(No, this is not a blog entry about the concert I recently attended - The Eagles, who else... - it's about ephotozine!)

"Prepare to be hooked", I've seen several members comment in threads where newcomers introduce themselves. "Pull up a chair and make yourself comfortable - if you're like me, you'll be spending a lot of time on here...", I've also seen several times.

And there's something in that. I'm like that as well. I started out just putting a few photo...

Some time ago I decided that I can't always rely on foreign trips to find good-looking landscapes. Okay, so I prefer mountains and rocky coasts, and my country doesn't have any of those. But I can't only take photos on holiday, that's just too limiting.

So I came to the conclusion that I should find ways to get to know my own country better - there were bound to be photogenic spots, however small, that I didn't know.

And then I came across a magazine with an interesting mix of nature a...

Of late I have seen an improvement in my usable/unusable shots ratio.

I used to have to throw out a very high percentage, but it has been getting better. Not just because I'm getting better at taking shots. No, I also (partly) put it down to knowing when there's no use in taking a shot.

In the past, whenever I had put effort into finding and reaching a photogenic spot, I'd want to take a photo of it. I suppose I just always wanted to see some kind of result from my efforts. So whatever...

So often when you see an event that makes a good photo opportunity, you see a host of off-white lenses.

I know that this light coating has practical purposes, but some seem to also regard it as a status symbol. After all, it is often an indication of an expensive lens. (Not always, though: I briefly owned a ridiculously cheap off-white long zoom lens, but it was so slow in focusing that I sold it.)

All my current lenses are black. Even the one and only Canon L lens I own (200mm 2.8 Mk ...

Every now and then I take some photo albums with me when I visit my mother. She has no Internet access and it's the only way for her to see what I've been up to.

Before my last visit, I realised that it was a long time ago that I had shown her any photos - several years, in fact. So off I went, with a bag full of photo albums.

On previous occasions she had been quite complimentary. The only thing she didn't "get" was why one would want to seriously manipulate an image, like my Mont St. ...

So that was Norfolk...

Just got back from a holiday in Norfolk. Those who've heard me say that I don't like flat countryside as much as hills and mountains probably think that's strange. But Norfolk isn't as flat as some claim it to be (it's more than just the Broads, after all), and besides, I should get my mountain "fix" in Scotland in November. Also, we had a few good reasons to stay close to a ferry. Long story, I'll spare you the details.

So, as I said, Norfolk isn't as flat as some say it is, which is good...
